To measure the volume a tool, easy to install and use, is the Checker https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker It checks your exported mp3 file and it shows the volume among other things. So then you'll know if you need to amplify, de-amplify, and by how much, to reach desired levels of 89dB

For the Noise Reduction, here's a picture guide: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Noisecleaning_With_Pics#Clean_up_the_Noise:_Audacity_versions_from_2.1.0

Would you like to give it another try? You could do the text from the 1 minute test, to check for any popping Ps or hissing Fs

Hi there! Sorry it has been so long.

Thank you for the info. I finally got ReplayGain installed and ran it with Amplify. What do you think?

I double checked and no replaygain.
It's a plug-in; I should have known.

If I could add it, then so can you. Don't worry; we're here to help.

So glad to see you back! You've got the skills! We just need to help you a tiny bit with the engineering.

First, your volume is some 3dB too low. Not a problem, right? I believe you know how to ramp that up.

There is still a little background noise, but it isn't too bad. Please do me a favor and look at the sound track of your recording on Audacity. That first second is a bit fuzzy looking, correct? If you select that first second and then run the two steps for noise reduction, you'll sound great.

So you select the first second, do step one of the noise reduction (on top), then select the whole recording and do the second step.

You're almost ready!
Drop and roll!

By the way llebell, I've got Section 16 reserved for you in the Pothunters project should you want it. Just let me know, please, but don't feel obligated.

Thanks! I'm not sure if I did it rights. I went to effects/amplify and changed the 'New Peak Amplitude' from 0 to a 3.

I selected the first second and did as requested. What do you think?

Not quite.

One of the easiest ways to increase the volume is to use ReplayGain, but your settings my not be set just right yet. Another way is to go to the far left of the sound track and you'll see a button that controls the gain. You can move the slider left and right to decrease and increase the gain. That's volume, I guess, in tech talk.

I'm sorry to make a chore of this, but we'll have to work on your noise reduction, too. I wonder if you followed all the steps.

To make things easier and more clear, would you mind recording a new section of something. It's really best to do the peter piper script provided in the one-minute test instructions, but i supose any 30 or 40 second recording will do.

I’ll do that. First I’m going to get my son to do my setup. He’s got a degree in computer science so this should be easy for him. 😊

I could not do better!

The Checker program comes back with an indication of higher than desired background noise, but I don't hear. Seriously, I cannot hear it and I say you're ready to take on a project or two!

Wonderful!
