Welcome to LibriVox, Darren, and thank you for your test! You sound good

There are two things to fix in the test:

- the volume is a bit soft. We aim for 89dB, but accept recordings that fall in the range between 87 and 91dB. Your test is a little soft at almost 84 dB. You can experiment with increasing the input volume a little, if it is not cranked all the way up (for instance the little slider button in Audacity next to the microphone symbol). Also, you can adjust the volume in Audacity. To get this test within the good range:
Select the whole recording. Click Effect > Amplify and use the setting Amplification5. Click OK.

- also, the bitrate needs to be 128kbps and constant. You fix this when you export the recording. My Audacity is not the lastest version, but this is how it works there:
You must have something recorded in order to activate the Export function. If you try to export an empty project, you will find that the Export function is greyed out. For testing purposes, just click the record button and then stop after a second or two.

Click File > Export
You'll see the "Export file" window appear. You can select the destination here, of course. Enter the name of the file (without the "mp3" on the end - it'll be added for you).

In the "Save as type" box, select "MP3 files", but DON'T click Save yet!!!
Now look for the "Options" box in the Right lower corner of the window, and click on that.

You'll see a "Specify MP3 Options window now. Here click on:
Constant
128 kbps
Joint stereo
Click "OK"
Now click on "Save", and your mp3 will be exported at 128 kbps.

Please make the test louder and export with the correct bitrate, save, upload and post again in this thread. You're doing well!

Yes! Great, now everything is just right  You can head over to the Readers Wanted forum(s) and claim a section or two that looks interesting. Have fun!

ETA:
I merged the two threads :)
