PL NOTES:

SECTION 13

This is a very well done recording. The volume just comes in a little low at 84.4dB and should be between 86-92, with optimal level of about 90dB. Just amplify a bit and re-upload for the OK. Thanks.

PL NOTES:

SECTION 13

Hi Daniellec73,
Unfortunately the recording is still not in spec. In fact, the dB went down from 84.4 to 81.7. Running this through the audacity amplify effect I was able to get it into the allowable range. However, rather than just doing it for you, I wanted to reach out to make sure that you understand the process as well. This could just have been an accident or a digital anomaly (we know how that goes). It is also sort of difficult to determine what gain is without the Checker tool to run it through. Please reach out if there are any questions on how to do this. Lynnet is also a wonderful resource for tech support as she has done a fair amount of recording on her own. I have not, but I have learned some things along the way. I have pasted some link below if you need them. Otherwise please reach out for guidance and I will help as best I can!

Thank you so much. I have downloaded the Checker. What a great tool!
Quick question, when I use "Amplify" in Audacity, how do I tell the final clip is within the volume range? I can only see quantifiable amounts for "Amplification" and "New Peak Amplification". How do I work out what the volume would be? Thanks for you help. I know once I get the hang on this, I'll be okay.

Hi Danielle. Thanks so much for trying out the Checker. It is certainly something that everyone should be using. No-one I know has been able to determine dB level of a recording without it. :hmm: Which leads to your second question.
The only way I am aware of how to do this is to export the mp3 from audacity and then run it in the Checker tool to see what the gain truly is. I think audacity should be able to add this feature, but they have not yet. Maybe on the next revision.
Just make sure that you do not allow clipping when you do the amplification. That could cause some curious errors that require redub to fix! And always save every file until you have final approval. This allows you to go back to easily recover files if any kind of corruption should occur. These are all digital translations after all!
