Please note for future uploads, you need the leading zero in the file name (_01_)
Welcome to LibriVox and congratulations on submitting your first recording.
I enjoyed your reading, your tonal quality, and your pacing.
However, you seem to have some of the same technical issues that I had when I first started.
Firstly, your overall volume was too low at 83.2 db - the target is 89.0 and the acceptable range is 86.0 to 92.0.
Have a look at https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Setting_Recording_Input_Level for setting your raw recording level
In Audacity you will also find the option to amplify under 'effects'.
How to amplify in Audacity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw
I always check my MP3 files using the checker tool to verify volume and other settings https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/
Please leave a silence at the beginning or your file of between 0.5 and 1.0 seconds in length: yours was over 2 seconds. At the end of the file, please leave five seconds of silence with the microphone on, not generated silence: yours was just over one second.
I see from your test file that you already have some experience with noise reduction, but there are a couple small "environmental" room noises that crept into your file. For instance at 28:43 there is a definite "ching."
Your file contains an interesting repeated artifact that sounds like a click, and looks in Audacity like a big drop with a rebound: it reminds me of a diving board's action. I am guessing these appear when you start a section. You will want to edit these out. I found them at the very beginning of the file, 0:18, 2:12, 3:40, 4:53, 6:58, 8:08, 10:03, 12:48, 14:29, 15:27, 16:16, 17:28, 18:24, 19:24, 19:45, 21:54, 24:13, 25:03, 28:14, and 29:59.
All of us make a few slight stumbles while reading and will substitute "his" for "their", "the" for "that", etc. or add or drop "the", "a", etc. As long as it does not affect the meaning of these are acceptable. I did come across some words and phrases that should be rerecorded and/or edited.
5:22 "that while" I heard "while that while"
7:29 "Dr. Calgari" I heard "Dr. Dal-Calgari"
8:14 "The one great" I heard "the case of one great"
10:34 "Mack Sennett" I heard "Mark Sennett"
11:47 "presents" I heard "prevents"
12:13 "received" I heard "re-cived"
12:49 "comic" I heard "cosmic"
13:39 "parodied" I heard "par-i-a-ted"
14:18 "Lubitsch, in a small" I heard "Lubitsch <gap> a small"
15:24 "Mr. Chaplin" I heard "Mr. Chap"
18:19 "amuses" I heard "amazes"
20:03 "Vaudeville" I heard "vaun-de-ville"
21:22 stumble: for, for ….
21:26 "has never been" I heard "has within never been"
22:38 "ingratiating" I heard "integrating"
22:45 I heard an unscripted interjection
23:34 "romantic attachment of the wife" I heard "romantic -- of the rife"
23:40 "to cure her he bought" I heard "the cure her be brought"
26:08 "trembling beneath" I heard "trembling truth beneath"
27:18 "revue" I heard "revenue"
28:51 "then as now" I heard "then now as"
29:35 "broad" I head "board"
29:45 "fault" I heard "faint"
If you would please carry out the edits and then reupload the file using the same file name (with the _01_). Then post in this thread. If you need any more help, please just ask.
Thanks,
Jim

Welcome to LibriVox!
I enjoyed listening to your recording very much and look forward to hearing more.
However, there is a technical aspect of your file which needs some attention:
The volume is 72.6 dB, which is too low. We aim for between 86 - 92dB, but ideally we would like it to be at 89 db.
On the LibriVox WIKI, there is an article on setting your recording level: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Setting_Recording_Input_Level
In Audacity you will also find the option to amplify under 'effects'.
How to amplify in Audacity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw
I always use the checker tool to verify volume and other settings before submitting a recording: https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/
Also, there is one edit which I would consider to be optional.
At 0:46 "Burlesque is not of these", I heard "Burlesque is not one of these"
Please correct the volume and the optional edit if you wish. Then upload the file using the same file name and post in this thread. If you need any more help please just ask. Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. I decided to just redo the whole thing. :p
Also, thanks for recommending that checker app. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of volume adjusting, which is great.

You will find that everyone in the LibriVox family will go out of their way to help anybody else. There is not a mistake that can be made that I have not already made myself. For fun, have look at the Bloopers thread.
In order to help you along on your LibriVox career, I would like to make two comments. The first is to be very careful with your file names: your second upload had an extra underscore "_" between 128 and kb. Do not worry about it this time as I have already corrected it. The second point, and this is again only for future reference, is that if you have corrections to a file, just make the corrections and do not rerecord the entire section. The reason for this is that if there is a very long recording (I have had some approaching 60 minutes) and the reader rerecords the whole section, then the proof-listener (PL) has to re-listen to the whole file rather than just the corrections. In this particular case, the file was short and with the original volume issue a complete rerecord was warranted.
Again, nice job on this section and I look forward to hearing more from you.
If you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Cool. Thanks for being so understanding. I'll keep your comments in mind for the future.JHedrick wrote: ↑October 26th, 2021, 4:16 pm
