A Lad of Mettle, by Nat Gould (1857 - 1919)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-lad-of-mettle-by-nat-gould/

When Edgar Foster came to Redbank School he was sixteen, small for his age, but muscular and active. Alumni of the school included accomplished athletes, decorated military men, members of the diplomatic service and churchmen. What does the future hold for young Edgar? One thing he knows -- it will involve adventure. Some listeners may be offended by some of the language used. It is Librivox policy to read texts as written, reflecting the views of the day. Hey,
I'd love to read the whole book. I don't know if you'd prefer to have a diverse cast of readers, but I'd love to do all 30 chapters if possible. I can easily cover them in the 2 month deadline. If not the whole book, then please let me know which chapters you're happy to assign to me :)
I'd like to use the name "Ryan Jakob" in publishing too, please.
Many thanks for extending the opportunity.

Welcome to Librivox!

I have a feeling you may be trying to run before you can walk
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.

We also strongly recommend you start with a collaborative work so you can gauge just how much work is involved. Many readers begin with the Weekly Poetry viewtopic.php?f=19&t=89063 . A solo is definitely a possibility down the line, but we discourage new readers from doing that. I will just assign one section for now, but once that has been submitted, you will be free to claim any sections that are still open. Your section will be held for 1 month pending your test. Please keep in touch if there is a problem.
If you click on your name in the Magic Window, you will be taken to your catalog page.Be sure to read the first post - all the info you need is there, but if anything doesn't make sense, just ask. The wiki (see the top of the page) has bundles of info too.

Hey Lynnet,
I've posted my 1 minute test, here's the link if you needed it as well:
https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/1_Minute_Test_Recording.mp3
I'll certainly look at the weekly Poetry once my mic setup has been approved, and then get straight on to that chapter assigned :)

Chapter 2

The volume is too low at 84.8 dB. We look for 89 dB but can work with 86-92. Please amplify by about 4 dB.

You can check your own volume and other specs with our Checker program. It is safe, free and easy to use. https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker
