Thanks. It's only 135 years old. I edited my original post, but you had already copied it.

I asked my librarian about the noise, and she said, "no one would come here
if they weren't allowed to talk out loud." So I read out loud.

I just PL'd your section. It was wonderfully read - you really catch every nuance of stress and inflection necessary to understand the meaning of the text. Sometimes these sort of texts can make your mind wander amongst the waffle, but you helped my mind stay on track

There's just one thing I hope you can do, before I mark it PL OK. You read the footnote at the end of the text, but I wonder if you could cut and paste it to the part where it is referred to in the text? ... this is after the sentence "And if this is the order of creation in man, should we not reasonably look in this direction for the key to the variation of animals and the order of creation in general?" - in your audio, I believe it should be pasted into about 11:56, which is where you end that sentence. You'll see the "[39]" in the text to mark where the footnote should be read.

Hope that's okay. Thanks

Congratulations on focussing throughout! I like to read aloud because it forces me to focus! Listening, I'm off.....!

I inserted the footnote and jacked volume by 2bB.

Should we try "Maurice" by EM Forster next? Apparently Carpenter inspired that book (as well as Sri Aurobindo, according to Wikipedia!). Anyone admin enough to look into that?

I really wish we could - I may be wrong, but I believe it was published posthumously. It started just as something he wrote and distributed privately to his friends. Wiki suggests it was only formally published in 1971. It's a great book though, unfortunately, not PD for a long time.

thanks. I never understood ins and outs of pd. Who holds the copyright? publisher? estate? Oh well, there are others, but this Carpenter made an impression on me. Early anthropocentrist - as often happens, that insight of his got twisted over time...

Thanks for this book.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've just written up his bibliography: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=88926
It might interest you. I hope to put together some more Carpenter works in the future.

Nicely done, again. My takeaway from that essay is that context is important! Not good or bad, but good (for what?) and bad (for what)... I agree with much of what he said, though unfortunately I don't think we have adopted much of what he suggested.
Thanks Czandra
