PL Notes for section 16

The volume is 94dB, which is too high. We aim for between 86 - 92dB, but ideally we would like it to be at 89 dB.
In Audacity you will also find the option to amplify under 'effects'.

If you like, you can use the checker tool to verify volume and other settings https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/

If you could carry out the edits and reupload using the same filename thanks

Reuploaded file is here:

https://librivox.org/uploads/mightyfelix/bookaboutmyself_16_dreiser_128kb.mp3

Length is 17m 40s.

This is strange. I admit I took a shortcut on this upload. I ALWAYS run ReplayGain in "normalize" mode inside Audacity before I export the file as MP3. And after doing that, I have NEVER had a problem with the volume when running the file through Checker. When I did it on this file, it indicated that everything was fine. So "just this once" I skipped the Checker step and uploaded the file, with the results you saw.

To double-check, I reloaded the file in Audacity and ran ReplayGain in normalize mode again. It made no changes. I re-exported it and ran Checker. It showed the volume still at 94db.

So I used the Amplify effect and lowered the volume by 4db. Then I ran ReplayGain again. This time ReplayGain actually RAISED the volume by 4db, so that when I re-exported the file, it was back to 94db.

So I deleted my copy of replaygain.ny, redownloaded it, reinstalled it, and re-enabled it, and went through the whole process again - with exactly the same results. For some reason ReplayGain is no longer working for me. Yet I swear it was working fine till just now.

Is there a preference somewhere that I'm missing?

I'm using Audacity 3.0.2, but that's not new - I've been using that for a couple of months and haven't noticed any issues. I also uploaded a couple of other files to Librivox only a day or two earlier with no apparent problems.

There's no excuse for my not running Checker before uploading the file, and I won't ever skip that step again, but I'm puzzled as to why ReplayGain isn't giving me the same reliable results it's been giving me for months.

Further update. It gets mysteriouser and mysteriouser. I ran several of my raw files for previous Librivox contributions through my usual post-process script, ending with ReplayGain, and did NOT have a problem. For those files, ReplayGain worked, and for each one correctly identified and adjusted any volume problems so that it passed the Checker edit. It was only this file that confused it. Clearly I did something either in the recording or in the post-processing before I got to ReplayGain, which is usually my last step, that was different for this file, and which threw things out of kilter. I’m dashed if I know what it was.

In any case, the lesson (for me) is, don’t skip the Checker step before uploading the file.

It is very strange that that has happened. This file is now PL OK and I ran it through my own replaygain and it was fine. It may just have been a glitch that has now sorted itself out. Hopefully you won't have this problem again. Many thanks for persevering.

Welcome to Librivox.

I will reserve those sections for you but you will need to complete your 1 minute test first and get the ok (see below). Also can you let me know how you would like your name to appear in the catalogue. It can be your forum name, real name, or any other pseudonym of your choice thanks.

We urge you to make a "1 Minute Test" for review before you start actively recording. This is NOT an audition, but a way to check to make sure all your technical settings are correct, your volume loud enough, etc. You will find the information for the 1-Minute Test Recording here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test. The instructions also tell you how to upload your test and then post in the Listeners and Editors Wanted forum so someone can give you feedback on it.

An overview of how Librivox works can be found here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_LibriVox_Works

There are numerous ways to volunteer here. An important one is proof-listening, which consists of checking someone's recording for errors. If you'd like to give that a try, you can find lots of information here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Guide_for_Proof-listeners
If you wish to try your hand at recording, the place to start is the Newbie Guide to Recording: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Newbie_Guide_to_Recording, which tells you how to set up your computer to record.

One of our volunteers has created a number of videos that you might find helpful to learn more about the workings of Librivox. You can find a listing of those here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/User:Philchenevert

Also to point out to professional (or aspiring) Voice Over artists, all our recordings are put back into the public domain which means sometimes they are sold on ebay, etc. Have a look at this page which describes our Public Domain policy: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain

We hope you have fun and please, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
Michele

Thanks for reserving chapters 23, 24, and 25 for me! I have uploaded my 1-minute test at the Listeners and Editors Wanted Forum.

Here is my 1-minute test link: https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_yangxu.mp3

Please let me know if there are any issues and anything else is needed to do before I'm eligible to starting recording for those chapters.

Thank you for your time.

Hi and welcome to Librivox. Thank you for your recording. The reading is great and all the technical aspects are correct. You are now good to go and find something you would like to read. Do ask if you have any questions. Have fun.
Just for future recordings your volume is at the upper level that we accept. Please do not let it get any louder than this.

If you like you can use the checker tool to verify volume and other settings.
