The Valley of the Squinting Windows by Brinsley MacNamara (1890 - 1963).

Volunteers outside the USA: Brinsley MacNamara died in 1963. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years and Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955).

The Valley of the Squinting Windows was the author's first novel and proved controversial. In it, he tells a realistic tale of life in a small Irish town as he saw it, rather than the romanticized version told by others, or how the locals wished to be seen. Mrs. Brennan, the local dressmaker, has opinions. Her son is off studying to become a priest, which elevates him -- and thus her -- in her opinion. Mr. Brennan is forgiven all his transgressions, on account of being father to the son. Mrs. Brennan is less tolerant of those not related to her and her acerbic tongue is well-known throughout the village. Imagine the villagers' satisfaction when young John Brennan doesn't quite follow the path anticipated by his mother!( )
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/61102
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi, may I dpl? Sounds like a wonderful book.
Love gothic novels? Try Children Of The Abbey. Like surprising mysteries? Try The Amathist Cross. Looking for an easy read? Try Harriet's Choice.

Hello!

I would like to volunteer to Solo read this book. Would that be possible?
I'd like to appear under the name Chelsey Zedlitz.

I hope to hear from you and look forward to (hopefully) working with you!

Thank you for your interest.
This has been set up as a collaborative or group project, so although a single reader may claim multiple sections, it will remain open to other readers at the same time.
I see you have not yet recorded anything for LV.
The first step is to complete a 1 minute test. This is not an audition. We assume you are able to read  It is more to check your technical specs. Even if you record professionally, our requirements are slightly different from, say, Audible. https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test
If your specs need adjustment, there are some knowledgeable people with the necessary know-how to guide you in the Listeners Wanted Forum.
Once that has been OK'd, you will be free to claim in any open project. New readers are vehemently discouraged from embarking on solos. They are a huge commitment and amount of work... and if you are new to recording, you may find it more difficult than you think. If you are experienced, I am sure you understand the need to go slowly at first. Many readers begin with the weekly poetry.
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=83120
That, however, isn't required. I'd recommend selecting a section of 1500 words or less for your first recording. If you nail that, you might want to select a project for a solo (or many readers stay with group projects, either indefinitely or to gain experience). If you decide on a solo, it is up to you to find a Public Domain work to read. There are several sources but projectgutenberg.org is a great place to start.

In the meantime, I will assign you section 0 (Preface) in this project, and once your test is complete, you can record. You get 2 months, so if you decide to try the poetry or a shorter section first, you should have plenty of time.

Hi and welcome! I think you may be claiming too much too soon...I see you’re also claiming in another of my projects. I will just assign 3 for now, but you can certainly claim more later if they are still available.
