Hi Lynette,
I’ll claim chapter 18 if you wish. I want to be consistent with the other readers. Are we reading everything from each chapter heading, including dates? Do we ignore footnotes? If another reader from this project wants 18, please give it to that person. You’ll ensure better consistency that way.

Hi Lynette,

I'd do chapter 18 if djsmith is okay with it. Just wanting to pitch in and get started, as I'm still fairly new here.

Thanks!

Chris

Thank you, Dori and Chris...

Unless Rita says otherwise, I would say skip the “abstract”, including dates... although dates within the body of the text should be read.

As for footnotes, it is at the reader’s discretion. In general, my view is that they should be skipped unless they add important or interesting information. I always ask why such information isn’t in the body of the text :hmm: If the footnote is “see page 76” or referring to another work, they have no benefit in an audiobook. If you do include a footnote, it should be at the end of the sentence or paragraph and say “footnote.... end footnote”

I am assigning this to Dori... we work on a first come, first served basis.

Also, Chris:

You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.

Just for consistency's sake, you can skip the footnotes. But do please include the dates that appear at the top of the chapter.

Thank you for chapter 18, which was read beautifully. We only have one issue, and that is with the volume which is at 83.1 Volume needs to be somewhere between 86-92, although a mid range, about 90, would be ideal. You can check your volume and other settings for each recording by using the Volume Checker (link: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker) before submitting your file.

Adjustments to volume can be made in a number of ways: Using the Audacity program, you can highlight the passage (or entire text) you want to amplify, click on Effects (at the top) and choose Amplify. Experiment with that a bit and you'll find the right volume. You could try it with a sample text first. The second option to adjusting volume is also within Audacity, but on the left side. You'll see a mute button with a sliding scale below it. Highlight your text and click on that box. Again, you can check your volume with the Checker until you get it where you want it to be. Alternately, you can use that sliding scale to increase the volume, and that is my preferred method.
