Very nicely read! I checked your catalog page to see if you had done any solos I could listen to. Apparently you haven't. Have you ever considered it?

Are you doing a noise reduction pass before you normalize? Normalize can amplify the background noise in quiet times, resulting in strange sounds. For my recordings, I first run an "amplify" pass, which will amplify everything some (including the background noise), followed by noise reduction, which eliminates the background noise all over including in the quiet times. After that, normalize doesn't do weird things with my quiet times. Noise reduction itself is a 2-step process; if you don't do the "get noise profile" step correctly, it won't filter out the background noise when you run the second step.

I also found that I got much less hum in the background when I plugged my mic into a different port. I use a USB microphone, and a docked laptop. Turns out the USB ports on the dock introduce a lot of hum; moving the mic to a port that's on the laptop and not on the dock made a huge difference for me.

I had thought about doing a solo reading but to tell the truth I am very wary of getting 'bogged down'!
Just so I have some information. How do you go about it. Choosing the book etc?

Choosing the book is up to you. Any book will work, as long as it's public domain.

If you really don't have something in mind, you can browse Book Suggestions and find something that intrigues you.

The hard part of soloing (besides getting bogged down) is managing the Magic Window yourself. But after the initial setup, it's pretty straightforward.

Hi McScotty! Thanks for the advice. I ended up doing something pretty similar. I do a pass where I edit out my mistakes, then I amplify, then use room tone to cut out all the breaths and other noises. That seems to have done it.
