The Star-Chamber: An Historical Romance, Volume 1 by William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-star-chamber-an-historical-romance-volume-1-by-william-harrison-ainsworth/

A romance with the backdrop of the notorious Star Chamber of the English legal system. The Chamber began as purely administrative, but gradually took on more of a judicial role, enforcing the monarch's will when the courts could or would not do so. As the mix of fact and fiction unfolds in this tale, the court is beginning to lose favor during the reign of James I as the church once again increased its power, while Parliament's power decreased as the monarch tried to rule without them. 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/12396
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Librivox!
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.
You will also need to be added to the catalog of readers. I will add you using your forum name, but if you prefer your real name or a pseudonym let me know. We can also link to a personal blog or website. If you click on your name in the Magic Window, you will see your own personal catalog page.

We strongly recommend submitting contributions to group projects before taking on a solo. Too often, we have seen readers take on a solo then disappear when they realize just how much work is involved. I know you are probably the exception, but we err on the side of caution 8-)
However, as this project was set up as a group project, how about I assign you the first section and we take it from there? You can always claim more (even all) later.

Be sure to read the first post - all the info you need is there, but if anything doesn't make sense, just ask. The wiki (see the top of the page) has bundles of info too.

Thank you for the info. I'm posting my test now. I am a disabled stay at home mom with time on my hands. I am also using this as a learning experience to try to become a narrator for audibles and so will need to learn the whole process and the time it takes. I'm not going to let that stop me from continuing to read for LibriVox if I am accepted as a reader however. I simply enjoy books, and while I'm no author, this allows me to have a part in the process.

I have made the edit to your catalog entry.

You will be accepted as a reader -- I don't think we turn anyone away. It's just you may need a little guidance on improving the quality of your recording.
If you have never read audiobooks before, you may be surprised at how much work is involved... and how much there is to learn! We lose many readers when they realize the complexity and time involved, although once you get everything set up correctly, and identify any recurring issues, it gets a lot easier, as does the recording itself, and the editing.
I am just suggesting easing in gently and 'learning your craft' before taking on a huge project (which will probably be 50+ hours of work). There is plenty of help available if you need it. Everyone here is friendly and most can offer advice; we also have the wiki (see the link under the logo at the top of the page); I personally love our video guides as I'm a visual learner... these were made by one of our admins (I'd suggest only watching those specifically relevant, so you don't get too confused) https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/User:Philchenevert.

Please ask if you have questions. Oh yes, and many of our readers do go on to read for Audible (myself included), but here we do not require professional standard and you don't need to audition 8-) It's definitely a good way to hone your skills and gain confidence.

I actually have been wanting to become a reader for a very long time. I have had an Audibles account for about 8 years now and listen to audible books a lot. I just didn't know how to get into the business. I found you guys because I was listening to one of my books when I ran into an acquaintance who happens to be one of your readers. I also have one of my best friends that was in a band for many years and has some experience with editing and sound equipment. Like I said, I am physically disabled with a genetic condition that leaves me unable to do much physically, but I am able to spend the time required for projects like this. Reading has always been a passion of mine from a very young age. To be able to be a part of something like this, and to possibly get good enough to make money doing it, is a dream come true for me.

I'd like to claim DPL for this project if I may. I have the same goals and for similar reasons, so I think we'll get along well.

Jen, I can answer some of your questions on how to get started once you feel you're ready.

Hi there! I'm a first-time reader for LibriVox, and would be very much interested in reading a section of this book (under the pseudonym Karl Young).

Thanks so much! :D

Hi and welcome!
I see you have submitted your test  Someone will be along to check it soon and I'd recommend waiting for the OK before beginning here.
I will create your catalog page, and you will be able to access it by clicking on your name in the Magic Window.
Please be sure to read the first post, but if you have questions, ask. You can also check out the wiki (link at the top of the page) as it has plenty of useful information.

Hi again. I just got the "OK" for my 1-minute test, so I'm good to go!

So excited to get started. I'll be sure to look over all the instructions very carefully. The wiki link was very helpful and interesting.

Have an amazing day!

Hi, I'm interested in helping out with this project. I've never done this before, but I've been through the guides and tutorials. Here is the 1 minute test recording, https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/test_oliverboliver.mp3. It got a little faster as I think I went through it way too many times trying to find the right combination of mic and placement. Actual reading will likely be a bit slower. My mic doesn't seem to be very "hot", so even with speaking almost directly into it, I amplified the track a little to get it to the expected levels. Please let me know if I need to do anything else differently.

My screen name is from one of the stories read to my children quite often, "Too Many Daves" by Dr. Seuss. My kids are grown, so now I read to everyone and no one.

Thank you. I am going to pass your test, but I would caution you to watch your volume. You are very close to the maximum allowable.
Which section would you like to read? I would recommend a shorter one to 'get your feet wet'.

Thanks for the feedback on the volume. I have acquired a better mic and will not amplify the volume.

Regarding section, I am willing to take on any part you suggest. I am here to help.
