Brown Book of the Hitler Terror and Burning of the Reichstag by Dudley Leigh Aman Baron Marley (1884 - 1952).

Volunteers outside the USA: Dudley Leigh Aman Baron Marley died in 1952. His work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years.
The Brown Book was the first English publication to detail events which were currently happening in occupied Germany in 1933; book-burning and the destruction of universities, the development of concentration camps for Jewish people, forced labour and the use of the "shot while trying to escape" excuse for murder by police. This was the first time such events had been brought into the public consciousness, and the book was supported by documentation with names and dates - substantial evidence of the brutality which was taking place. (Please note the confronting and graphic nature of the content of Chapters 7, 9 and 10 before listening.)

Lord Marley described the book as "a contribution to the fight against Hitler Fascism. This fight is not directed against Germany; it is a fight on behalf of the real Germany." (Summary by Beth Thomas and the Introduction)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!):

I haven't read the whole book myself either - this is just to give readers an idea of what they are getting into!

I usually adjust the summary at the end anyway. I never know what to put for key words - is be happy to take your advice on that!

This looks like a wonderfully interesting and important project. However, I've just taken a quick look at the text, and I wonder if 13 sections are enough for this book? With 11 longish chapters + Foreword, I think there may have to be some subdivisions. Chapter 1, depending on a reader's speed, might push up against 70 or 75 minutes, and there are a number of much longer chapters than that. For example, Chapter 4 ("The Real Incendiaries") could run to over 2-and-a-half hours of finished recording. Chapter 8 is another monster chapter.

Hi Elizabby,

May I please read section 1? (Or if you split this section, then the new Sections 1 and 2).

OK, I think I have the MW under control, but some of these chapters are very long!

Thanks Pam, I've put you in for Sections 1 and 2 and made a suggestion for splitting. However, I was skim reading very quickly so if you decide there is a better place to split the chapter go ahead and change it!

(Anne, with all the mucking around splitting the chapters I accidentally created an extra section which I didn't need in the end, so that one can be deleted please.)

Thanks, Elizabby. I will forge ahead.

Where you split it looks good.

Thanks,

Pam

Beth,

Would you like me to read “Section 1” instead of “Chapter” as written in the intro, as I am then reading “Chapter 1, Part 1” at the beginning of my reading?

At the end I read “end of Chapter 1, Part 1” as written in the outro.

My best,

Pam

Let's just go with the chapter and part numbers please - I think it will be too confusing to use the section numbers in the audio as well. Just use the section numbers for the filename.

Hi Beth,

I'm glad I asked! I will edit that out.
