Struggles and Triumphs, or Forty Years' of Recollections of P.T. Barnum, written by Himself by P. T. Barnum (1810 - 1891)--philc.

The 1873 edition of the autobiography of the founding genius of the "Greatest Show on Earth," P.T. (Phineas Taylor) Barnum. It details his life and business struggles up to the year 1872. Not only a showman and a museum operator, but an antislavery politician, Connecticut state legislator, Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and temperence lecturer, Barnum lays aside some of the gilding to provide his thoughts on his career, economics, how to make money, and other issues of the day. [This will be edited before cataloging]. ( DrPGould)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/50115 The BC has provided links to the text of each section in the MW for your reading convenience.
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello, everyone!

This is the longest project I have attempted to BC here at Librivox. Its total length is in excess of 170,000 words. To make it easier on the readers, I have split many chapters into separate parts. I don't believe there is a section in excess of 4000 words, and most are considerably shorter.

I hope this project will be fun for everyone who participates in it, and I welcome all who visit this board. A DPL and numerous enthusiastic readers are essential to this project's completion!

I appreciate the guidance and experience of our terrific MC--phil chenevert.

Ever forward, and many thanks,

Philip

Good morning Phil & Philip,
This looks extremely interesting, if you don't have a DPL, I would like to stake my claim. :D

Philip. Please take your time; this is a long term project and you have a complicated job of arranging the sections. And of course, things can be arranged differently as we go along.

Thanks so much, Phil, for the magic window and your wise counsel. But I just plowed on through. The links are all in place and have been tested, and I think the MW is ready to go! (I prepped for a couple of days to be sure I had everything in order--cutting and pasting is far easier than keystroke-by-keystroke).

Notes for readers:

1. Some of these sections contain tables and the occasional foreign word or phrase. Do the best you can with them. If you need help, please ask...we're all here to help each other.

2. Some of this material may be offensive by today's standards, either in referring to people of different ethnicities or physical attributes or even in the treatment of performing animals. This text was published in 1873 and reflects the standards of that day, not this. At Librivox, we take the text as we find it, not as we wish it could be.

I hope you will enjoy this project.

Many thanks,

Philip
