Jan Of The Windmill by Juliana Horatia Ewing (1841 - 1885).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/jan-of-the-windmill-by-juliana-horatia-gatty-ewing/

There were two storms: one within and one without. The windmiller's wife was starting to be very unhappy, and the rain was poring as fast as her tears. So her husband brought Jan, a neglected child, for her to care for. This book is about his growing up, being a favorite but still an outcast, and discovering himself. Rudyard Kipling claimed to know this novel almost by heart, and it is hoped you would like it too. Like any good children's book, it is perfect for both children and adults. ( Stav Nisser.)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    .
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    .
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    .
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/5601
    .
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
    .

Note: the length of the chapters is measured in pages. Each pages is about 2 minutes of final recording.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard
    .
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Ok, the window is ready. I united 41 and 42 into one section because both are very short, so you can delete section 42 from the mw.

This is so cute! I can't believe you haven't had any takers yet. Well, I can't help myself. I'll start you off with chapter 1.

However, I want to ask about the pronunciation of Jan. With girls, of course, it's pronounced to rhyme with can, but I knew a man named Jan (from Germany, I think he was), and it was pronounced Yahn.

(More info, if you're interested:
http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Jan
https://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Jan )

I'd like to use this pronunciation, but only if you agree and want to make it standard. I wouldn't want to be the only one saying "Yahn," and everyone else saying Jan to rhyme with can.

EDIT: Here is the pronunciation I mean: https://youtu.be/waCtNLE8J4s

Sure thing! I'll use "Yahn," since that's the pronunciation I'm familiar with. And since the setting does seem to be somewhat Nordic. I don't know if it actually says it anywhere.

One more question: Do you want me to read the chapter headings? "THE WINDMILLER’S WIFE.—STRANGERS.—TEN SHILLINGS A WEEK.—THE LITTLE JAN." Or just say "Chapter one" and then start with the main body of the text?

Oh yes, that would be lovely. I didn't add them to the mw because they are too long to enter the field, I think.

This looks cute. May I read chapter 5?

Also, the weigh in on the pronunciation of "Jan", by the looks of it it's a Dutch name (they're talking about his mother being from Holland and all). I recorded how the name would be pronounced in Dutch (it's my native language):

Foon - Real life is getting in the way of LV, will be slow until all is back on track, please bear with me!
