Final Report of the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/final-report-of-the-presidents-task-force-on-21st-century-policing/
In light of recent events that have exposed rifts in the relationships between local police and the communities they protect and serve, on December 18, 2014, President Barack Obama signed an executive order establishing the Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The President charged the task force with identifying best practices and offering recommendations on how policing practices can promote effective crime reduction while building public trust.

The task force recommendations, each with action items, are organized around six main topic areas or “pillars:” Building Trust and Legitimacy, Policy and Oversight, Technology and Social Media, Community Policing and Crime Reduction, Officer Training and Education, and Officer Safety and Wellness. ( From the Executive Summary)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://permanent.access.gpo.gov/gpo64136/taskforce_finalreport.pdf (direct PDF link)
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I would like to sign up for Section 5. If accepted, this would be my first contribution since joining.

Sure thing! How would you like to be credited in the catalog? There are places for a catalog name (some use a nickname or forum name, some their real name) and a link to a personal web site or blog, if you have one. I recommend using whatever name you say (if any) when you say, "recorded by [your name]" as that's how listeners will look for you. (Keep in mind that prospective employers, classmates, enemies, etc. can also find you using the catalog name, so be cautious if privacy might be an issue.)

Thanks, TriciaG! I had to think about that for a bit. I'd like to be credited under my given name, "Emily Ratliff". No website.

Getting ready to record my section, and I have a couple of questions

1) Should I be attempting to describe graphs as on page 9 and page 13, as we did the tables in other docs like the Watergate report? Or just leave them out?

2) when text is quoted from another source, should we say “quote / unquote or end of quote” before and after?

3) if we do point out quotes as such, and the source is not identified in the text, should we read the footnote that goes with it?

Thanks!

Leave out the graphs, I think.
Quote/end quote is up to you. I do like to hear them when listening, when the quote is more than a few words, so I know when the quote ends!
No, don't worry about the footnote on quotes.

We're going to make this one more "easy listening". ;)

Thanks!
