Our Army at the Front by Heywood Broun (1888 - 1939).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/our-army-at-the-front-by-heywood-broun/

During the US deployment in Europe in the final years of the Great War (WWI), the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) was accompanied by notable New York Tribune war correspondent, Heywood Broun. Although Broun better known (and remembered) as a sports writer, drama critic, journalist and social reformer, and not least as a member of the Algonquin Round Table, with such wits as Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley, his writing of the activities of the AEF as it helped defeat the Central Powers in the war provides a unique perspective, including a view of the international interaction between the Americans and their European allies.
The work concludes by reprinting the initial report to the Secretary of Defense by American General John J. (Black Jack) Pershing who was the commander of the AEF, and contains detailed information regarding the level of the US effort and something of the obstacles which had to be overcome for the AEF efforts to be successful. 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36514
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

To all who visit this board, welcome. This often overlooked work highlights Heywood Broun's talents as a war correspondent for the NY Tribune, attached to the AEF in Europe during the "Great War" (WWI). I am delighted that Lynda has agreed to be our DPL, and know that we will have a talented MC along in a bit.

Some of these sections may contain a phrase or two in French or German. Do not be intimidated...do the best you can with the pronunciation. (My French is horribly fractured, and it's better than my German). Read ahead with confidence and good things will happen.

If you have any questions regarding the project, please do not hesitate to ask. We're looking for a number of energetic readers!

Many thanks,

Philip

Thanks so much for MC-ing this. I'm delighted that you have "signed on" to this project (I just knew we'd get a talented MC ).
I'll get the MW filled in so we can get the project off the ground.

Philip

I have just finished another solo "Ripping Yarn" and taking into consideration the year (1918-2018) and my 25 yrs in the army this will make pleasant contrast.

May I claim Chapters 8 and 9 ?

Peter

Hi Peter -

Section 8 is PL OK

Only feedback is that there is an occasional beep noise that happens in the background and sometimes it sounds like a radio or TV is on. Just something to be aware of for future recordings.
