Stories of Symphonic Music by Lawrence Gilman (1878 - 1939).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/stories-of-symphonic-music-by-lawrence-gilman/
'A guide to the meaning of important symphonies, overtures and tone-poems from Beethoven to the present day'. Gilman became notorious for scathing reviews of compositions later to become classics. Here he analyzes the stories behind some famous and not so famous works. ( Lynne Thompson)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/57063
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

      Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

      Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Lynda
Thanks for your enthusiasm. Can I ask you limit to 5 sections (at first, at least) to allow other readers an opportunity? I'll assign the first 5 on your list. Thanks.

I felt free to listen to section five. :)

@limnei,

Very interesting things, I think I have to listen to the Suite. I didn't know also that Georges Bizet had a different name and Georges was only his nickname :)

Nice accent that you have, is that Spanish or something like this? :)

I found two things that I strongly recommend to correct:

2:10 stumbled over "composer": I hear 'compothoser'
8:23 stumbled over "two and one-half", I hear 'two and a one-half'

There are a lot of words I would pronounce differently but I figure that they might be understood. The ones which might be misunderstood are:

0:40 I hear Bougainville --> written is Bougival
1:00 I hear les Aresiennes --> written is l'Arlesiennes
1:15ff I hear Minenetto --> written is Minuetto , I hear Agietetto --> written is Adagietto
5:38 I hear Minenetto --> written is Minuetto

@Lynett,

I can only listen to about maximum one file per day in average; if that is ok, I'd like to PL the sections I didn't read :) I would love to read more sections but I don't want to claim because I don't know whether I can record them in time. PLing is easier as it is faster.

Thank you for PLing. Would you like me to sign you up as DPL? You can take it at your own pace (within reason!). Also, as many sections as you are able to record is fine.

Managed to listen to sections 00 and 01 :)

Very interesting, and clearly read. :clap:
I always knew it: "Music was then, as has been aptly said, a species of 'sensuous mathematics.'"
I love that little smile in your voice :9:

Section 00:

5:12 stumbled over "Eclogue of _S._ Mallarmé", there's a little snake in there :)

I guess you omitted the subtitle on purpose?

Section 01

I noted it PL ok, as listening level is standard. If I wouldn't read along in order to see if the text is complete, I probably wouldn't even have noticed. But as I noticed, I write the two little things I found down; please tell me if you change them so that I can spot-check:

7:18 I hear "to wait in the telling of a story" ?
10:30 missing "fervid" (Franz Liszt, a man of fervid imagination)

Hi there everyone!

My name is Matt and I’m new here!

Would it be okay if I started with Wagner (35) and then pick up a few more from there? (I’ve actually sung in a few of his operas!)

Cheers!
