An Account of Egypt by Herodotus (c.484 BC - 425 BC). Translated by George Campbell macaulay (1852 - 1915)

This project can now be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/an-account-of-egypt-by-herodotus-by-herodotus/
Being the second book of his histories, called Euterpe. HERODOTUS, known as the Father of History, was born at Halicarnassus, on the southwest coast of Asia Minor, in the early part of the fifth century, B. C. Of his life we know almost nothing, except that he spent much of it traveling, to collect the material for his writings, and that he finally settled down at Thurii, in southern Italy, where his great work was composed. He died in 424 B. C.

The subject of the history of Herodotus is the struggle between the Greeks and the barbarians, which he brings down to the battle of Mycale in 479 B. C. The work, as we have it, is divided into nine books, named after the nine Muses, but this division is probably due to the Alexandrine grammarians. His information he gathered mainly from oral sources, as he traveled through Asia Minor, down into Egypt, round the Black Sea, and into various parts of Greece and the neighboring countries. The chronological narrative halts from time to time to give opportunity for descriptions of the country, the people, and their customs and previous history; and the political account is constantly varied by rare tales and wonders.

Among these descriptions of countries the most fascinating to the modern, as it was to the ancient, reader is his account of the marvels of the land of Egypt. From the priests at Memphis, Heliopolis, and the Egyptian Thebes he learned what he reports of the size of the country, the wonders of the Nile, the ceremonies of their religion, the sacredness of their animals. He tells also of the strange ways of the crocodile and of that marvelous bird, the Phoenix; of dress and funerals and embalming; of the eating of lotos and papyrus; of the pyramids and the great labyrinth; of their kings and queens and courtesans. ( the author)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2131

NOTE: THE LINK TO THE TEXT FOR EACH SECTION WILL BE IN THE NOTES COLUMN. PLEASE USE THIS LINK, THANKS.
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

I love Ancient Greece, and I would love to join this recording team!
While this may be my first recording with Librivox, this isn't my first recording ever.

Though my username is synx, I'd like to go by my actual name, Savin Weera (www.savinweera.com), an English B.A. graduate currently residing in Denver.

Just to start out, I'd like to claim just part 2. Though maybe more if possible.

Hi Savin and a big welcome to LibriVox! :D I have assigned that section to you but before you record it, please make and upload a 1 minute test to be sure your recording set up is OK. Instructions can be found in our Wiki and in the first post of this project but Here is a video that may help too: How to Make your 1 minute test.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlaRY_-bcfs and then How to Upload your 1 minute test How to Upload your 1 minute test

(You may post the link to your test in this forum and I will see it much more quickly)

I also recommend Getting To Know our Forums Getting To Know Our Forums

We just want to check out your technical specs. Don't forget to post the link either in this thread or in Listeners WAnted forum.

Thanks! Your voice is great but there are two easy things you need to fix in your recording setup:
1. your bit rate is 49kbs variable and we need it at 128kbs fixed

2. the sampling rate should be 44.1 Hz yours it at 16 Hz.

for the bit rate > go to File / Export Audio
> open Options in the lower right corner
> select the following settings: Bit Rate Mode: Constant / Quality: 128 kbps / Channel Mode: Joint Stereo
> press Ok

for sampling >preferences >quality and there pick 44.1.
Please fix these two little things, make another recording, call it test 2 or something, upload again and put the new file here. you will be recording in no time! and if you have any questions please ask. :D

Here's the second test with adjusted bit and sampling rates.
I'm a little concerned if the sampling rate was changed correctly. I followed the instructions, but the track is compressed and sounds like a chipmunk.

Whoops. That does not souond right! I assumed you were using Audacity so that may be a problem if you are not. Will listen now.
EDIT: WOW, something bad happened with that recording and you do indeed sound like a chipmunk. It is funny, but I am baffled and do not know what happened to cause that. I should note that the sampling rate on your second test is still at 16000 Hz, not 44.1 Hz. Perhaps you should go back to your first test and work with that. Don't give up, it is probably something simple.

EDIT2: here is a link to our wiki on teck specs https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Tech_Specs
