The Apostle of Alaska: the Story of William Duncan of Metlakahtla, by John W. Arctander (1849 - 1920).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-apostle-of-alaska-the-story-of-william-duncan-of-metlakahtla-by-john-w-arctander/

This is this story of William Duncan, an English missionary, who established a colony among the Tsimshean people of the Pacific Northwest Coast of British Columbia and Alaska. He worked there from 1856 until his death in 1918 at the age of 86. ( Fritz)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/apostleofalaskas00lcarct
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm really cutting down on my DPL projects, but this sounds very special, so if you don't have someone lined up, I'd be glad to join this journey.

That would be awesome Larry. My wife sent me off on this journey with a copy of the book from her great aunt's library, who lived in Ketchikan in the early 20th century. Her husband ran a jewelry store and curio shop there for years, catering to tourists reaching there on the steam ships. I have flown surveys over the Alaskan Metlakahtla (now spelled without the "h"), but have never been on the ground there. Too bad I can't include the photographs from the book; there are many.

Great! Thanks for setting it up Ann.

It looks like some text from the template was left just below the MW. I can live with it as is or it could be chopped out - up to you.

I usually just make that part tiny instead of deleting it. I had someone get a little miffed with me once when I deleted that part. I can just delete it if you don't want it there, or we can leave it. It doesn't matter to me either way.

Hadn't seen that approach before, but it is fine as is. With my eyesight it is pretty invisible anyhow.

So, we're off with a couple of sections in the MW.

Ah, and the first two are PL OK!
The call is interesting -- and it is still happening!

I'll do my best to keep up with you, but if I fall behind at some point, don't worry; I'll get caught up.

Thanks Larry. I usually plan on doing one section a week, but then I get anxious and end up doing more :hmm: These were short so quick to do, but they get longer later on and will slow me down a bit. My voice only lasts for 5000 words or so.

Chapter 2 ready for PL. I thought I was going to get two sections done today, but daughter and her husband came over to fix waffles this morning and then we went to look at puppies. Life got in the way. :D
