Vespero:

Please provide the recording length for the file you uploaded. It is necessary for the cataloging function.

I'll put it in the MW for Kristin and PL it tomorrow. Be sure to check back for feedback.

Many thanks,

Philip

I am going to have to give up my claimed sections. Too much Real Life for a couple months.

Sorry, Todd

Hello, Lauren and Welcome to Librivox!

I'm the dedicated proof listener (DPL) here, so on behalf of our Book Coordinator Kristin, welcome to the project. I have held sections 25, 26, 27 for you pending the approval of your one minute test.

I listened to your test. You have a nice clear voice and read with great expression. It will be a delight to hear you read here for the project. However there were a few technical issues with the file, and I have a couple of suggestions as well.

Suggestion 1: Download and install the checker on your computer. The link for that is here: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

This software will tell you if your recording meets Librivox technical specs. I run all my recording through it before I upload.

The checker found 3 technical issues with your recording:

1. Your amplification was too low. The checker recorded your amplification level at 85.2 dB. The acceptable range here is 86.5 to 92 dB with 89 dB being a good midpoint target. Use the Amplification effect in Audacity and add 3.5 dB to your recording and that is covered.

2. The bit rate was not 128 kbps

3. The bit rate was set to be variable, not constant.

After you have amplified your file, export it again to MP3. At the bottom of the export window, you should see options. The first of which asks you for the Bit Rate Mode--be sure the radio button next to "Constant" is selected. The second set of options is File Quality. Selet 128 kbps from the menu that appears.

Easy fixes for these technical issues.

Suggestion 2. Adjust your microphone just a little to either slightly above or slightly below your mouth. This way your plosive sounds--most notably your "p" sound will not explode directly into the microphone. While they were not to the level of distracting in your reading (which would have called for correction) they were noticeable. The simple mike adjustment should take care of that.

You do not actually need to re-record anything. If you will take care of the technical issues and then reupload your test (and post here in this board where I will see it, I'll listen to it again and get an MC to clear you to record.

Welcome again!

Many thanks

Philip

Hi Philip,

Thank you, I appreciate it! I have fixed the issues you outlined, here is the new link: https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/newtest_laurenhuff.mp3

I'll be mindful of my plosives going forward.

Thanks,

Lauren

Lauren:

This test passed the checker. Your amplification was right at the top of the acceptable range (91.8dB) but still in it. I'll see if I can get an MC to set you up. (If you wish you can go ahead and begin your reading. It shouldn't take long to get this done.)

Congratulations and welcome (again)!

Welcome to librivox! I have signed you up in the mw.

If you'd like to introduce yourself to the community, you can do se here: http://forum.librivox.org/viewforum.php?f=17

An overview of how Librivox works can be found here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_LibriVox_Works

There are numerous ways to volunteer here. An important one is proof-listening, which consists of checking someone's recording for errors. If you'd like to give that a try, you can find lots of information here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Guide_for_Proof-listeners
One of our volunteers has created a number of videos that you might find helpful to learn more about the workings of Librivox. You can find a listing of those here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/User:Philchenevert

Also to point out to professional (or aspiring) Voice Over artists, all our recordings are put back into the public domain which means sometimes they are sold on ebay, etc. Have a look at this page which describes our Public Domain policy: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain

I hope you have fun and please, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!
