The Story of Eclipses by George F. Chambers (1841 - 1915).

Quote:
Public attention is already being directed to the forthcoming total eclipse of the Sun on May 28, 1900. This eclipse, though only visible as a partial one in England, will be total no further off than Portugal and Spain. Considering also that the line of totality will pass across a large tract of country forming part of the United States, it may be inferred that there will be an enormous number of English-speaking spectators of the phenomenon. It is for these in general that this little book has been written. (To be adapted before cataloging)

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/24222
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
    6. Level of prooflistening requested: standard Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening!

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please don't read the figure captions, and don't read the footnotes. Thanks!

I just found this on gutenberg and thought it would be a good - albeit slightly late - addition to our catalog.

DPL welcome! :D

This is fascinating to me, since the Great American Solar Eclipse will be tomorrow! We are not in the Path of Totality, but we do get to see 60% of the solar eclipse. I would love to take sections 2, 14, and 18!
I assume that I do read the captions on each of the figures, and the footnotes, as well?
Thank you!
:D

Thanks for claiming plaidsicle!

Ealswythe: Please don't read the figure captions - not much point in an audiobook - and skip the footnotes - most of them are references anyway.

Lmnei: I'm sorry, but plaidsicle beat you to section 20... the other two are your though.

Have fun! :D

Yes ma'am!

Homework done . . . although I'm not in the zone of totality, so I doubt if I will get to see much of what is described. Not that it matters, the front is already moving in and the forcast for tomorrow is partly to mostly cloudy. Sigh. :|

Still - on the posative side - I will be downtown, on the lake shore, with one of the best views of Chicago available from land! 8-)

5 - 24.02 - https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/storyofeclipses_05_chambers_128kb.mp3
6 - 22.13 - https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/storyofeclipses_06_chambers_128kb.mp3
7 - 3.30 - https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/storyofeclipses_07_chambers_128kb.mp3

And may I claim 8 and 9 for later reading?

MaryAnn

Thanks MaryAnn, that was fast! I didn't expect anything over night - and now the first sections are in, and about half of the project is claimed already...

Welcome on board Rapunzelina - you're in as DPL. Enjoy! :D

Aaagh I won't get a chance to record for a few days, but if you're still here, I'll be back. We're just 6 miles from the path to totality (how accurate is it anyway?) but we're off to an eclipse party at a vineyard on a mountain top.

Wow, Lynnet, yes, you're in Oregon, Path of Totality! Here in Los Angeles, we should see about 60%. And apparently, where I am, in the San Fernando Valley, it will be the best viewing conditions, because the rest of the city will be covered by a marine layer.
It will be interesting here, for sure! :D

Listening to the descriptions in sections 5, 6, 7, was like watching the eclipse, so I'm OK with not actually seeing it!
PL OK for sections 5,6,7!

It was pretty amazing... I wasn't especially excited and was going along with hubby; but it was definitely something to remember. And afterwards, nobody spoke for several minutes while we just absorbed the moment. :9: :9: 8-)
