Over the Hills and Far Away: A Story of New Zealand by Charlotte Evans (1841 - 1882).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/over-the-hills-and-far-away-a-story-of-new-zealand-by-charlotte-evans/

Over the Hills and Far Away follows Miss Lucy Cunningham as she travels by ship from England to join her father and brother in rugged and untamed New Zealand. A romanticised account of colonial life, Over the Hills is notable as one of the earliest New Zealand novels. ( Lewis Fletcher)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/downloads/EvaOver.pdf
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Lewis:

You're off to a great start. I have marked Sections 0-3 PL-OK, but I have a comment regarding Section 2 for your consideration.

At 0:18 you omitted "18--" from the end of the date in the diary entry. These sort of obscured dates frequently happen in literature. Usually in projects here at Librivox, they are read as "18 hundred something" or "18 hundred blank." If the date were integral to the plot, I would have noted it--but it does not appear to be so here--so its a judgment call as to whether it should be added--and your judgment is the one that matters.

Many thanks,

Philip

Thanks for the feedback, I was uncertain how to treat the obscured date. I have rerecorded the line in chapter 2 to say "eighteen hundred something": https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/overthehills_02_evans_128kb.mp3 (duration 9:14)

I have also uploaded chapters 4, 5, and 6:

https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/overthehills_04_evans_128kb.mp3 (9:55)
https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/overthehills_05_evans_128kb.mp3 (11:10)
https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/overthehills_06_evans_128kb.mp3 (8:54)

Lewis:

Sections 3, 4, and 6 are PL-OK! Nicely done!

Section 5--1 correction

at 7:40 The paragraph beginning "it had been the custom" and ending "believed in it accordingly" is omitted.

Many thanks,

Philip

Lewis:

Once again, nicely read. Sections 8 and 9 are PL OK!

Section 7 there is one error repeated at 3:39 and 3:48....I heard Mrs. Cunningham where I expected Miss Cunningham.

Many thanks,

Philip
