Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, Vol. 2. by Charles Mackay (1814 - 1889).

MacKay's second volume continues his early examination of the phenomenon of crowd behavior. While it was written in the mid-nineteenth century, the concept of crowd psychology has become even more relevant in the twentieth, and remains so, today. The work is still in print, and is considered important in economics for its analysis of financial bubbles, and it remains a touchstone in the field of crowd behavior. The topics considered in this work are the Crusades, Witch Mania, Slow Poisoners, Haunted Houses, Popular Follies of Great Cities, Popular Admiration of Great Thieves, Duels & Ordeals, and, finally, Relics. 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/24518/24518-h/24518-h.htm#contents2 For this project, our BC DrPGould has posted links to each section of the text in the second post below and will soon post them in the magic window.
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Volume 1 of this project was added to the Librivox Catalog in October 2008. I thought it would be neat if we could add this second and final volume before the 10 year anniversary of the project.

I have tried to divide the text into pieces of manageable length and to post the text, divided by sections here and in the magic window for the ease of our readers and DPL.

Section 1 Text
Section 2 Text
Section 3 Text
Section 4 Text
Section 5 Text
Section 6 Text
Section 7 Text
Section 8 Text
Section 9 Text
Section 10 Text
Section 11 Text
Section 12 Text
Section 13Text
Section 14 Text
Section 15 Text
Section 16Text
Section 17 Text
Section 18 Text
Section 19 Text
Section 20 Text
Section 21 Text
Section 22 Text
Section 23 Text
Section 24 Text
Section 25 Text
Section 26 Text
Section 27 Text
Section 28 Text
Section 29 Text
Section 30 Text
Section 31 Text
Section 32 Text
Section 33 Text
Section 34 Text
Section 35 Text

I realize this work is rather lengthy, but I think its subject matter and the quality of the writing make its length endurable.

Welcome to the project everyone, and enjoy. If there is a way I can make your task easier, please do not hestiate to let me know.

Many thanks,

Philip

MW is up. Once you have added the titles, we can move to Readers Wanted.

Edited - I obviously meant Readers Wanted not Readers Found. Duh!

Although I've got a number of DPL projects in my hopper, many of them are moving very slowly or have not started at all, and a few nearing completion, so I think I could take this one on for you. I'll hold off on taking any sections to read, however. I think you have done a great job in setting this up!

I've added Larry as DPL. I think it would be good to add the text links to the MW before we move to RW. Do you agree?

Links are all in MW and have been tested and check out OK. I think we're ready to go. (Took me awhile to figure out why the links wouldn't work...they must've used too much anesthetic.

Many thanks,

I see that Tovarish has reviewed your 1 minute test and that it passes the tech specs. We need an admin to clear you so that we can put together your reader page and "officially" get you started. That shouldn't take long, and there's no reason you shouldn't read in the meantime.

I have assigned Section 13 to you contingent upon the admin's clearance (which I don't think will be a problem...)

Many thanks for your interest and Welcome to the project and to Librivox. I hope this will be the first of many enjoyable experiences for you here.

If you have any questions or something is not clear, please do not hesitate to ask.

Many thanks,

Philip
