Social Statics: or, The Conditions Essential to Human Happiness Specified, and the First of them Developed by Herbert Spencer (1820 - 1903).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/social-statics-by-herbert-spencer/

Social Statics, or The Conditions essential to Happiness specified, and the First of them Developed is an 1851 book by the British polymath Herbert Spencer. In it, he uses the term "fitness" in applying his ideas of Lamarckian evolution to society, saying for example that "It is clear that any being whose constitution is to be moulded into fitness for new conditions of existence must be placed under those conditions. Or, putting the proposition specifically — it is clear that man can become adapted to the social state, only by being retained in the social state. This granted, it follows that as man has been, and is still, deficient in those feelings which, by dictating just conduct, prevent the perpetual antagonism of individuals and their consequent disunion, some artificial agency is required by which their union may be maintained. Only by the process of adaptation itself can be produced that character which makes social equilibrium spontaneous."
Despite its commonly being attributed to this book, it was not until his Principles of Biology of 1864 that Spencer coined the phrase "survival of the fittest", which he would later apply to economics and biology. This was a key tenet of so-called Social Darwinism.
Economist Murray Rothbard called Social Statics "the greatest single work of libertarian political philosophy ever written. (Wikipedia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://archive.org/details/socialstaticsor08spengoog Please do not read referenced page numbers. If you want, you may substitute page numbers for the correlating chapter number. Alternatively, you may skip them altogether.
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard+
+For chapters divided into sections, please verify the assigned sections begin/end as indicated.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
      Save files as

Please ignore tags - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

MC: I do not need the files or the MW transferred. I did however forgot to capture the screen names for the readers. If you can let me know those I can plug them in.

I have the files and due to corruption, editing for clipping/volume, and modification of section breaks all files will be re-uploaded. 3 of the files were corrupted. I was able to save some of what was available. It took ages to get it all done and ready. It’s a little disconcerting when you can visually identify a mic bump from another reader.

In actuality, two different soloist abandoned this project. It’s too much work to let go to waste and I think a group effort is just the thing to bring it to the finish line.

I'll MC for you. We will use the old project entry so you will get the MW that is in the database. You can edit it as needed.

Edited to add: Your text link is different than the original link (http://oll.libertyfund.org/title/273) in the database. Do you know that this is the same version of the text?

I used the text attached to the abandoned thread. When I PLed I didn't follow the text but I can spot check a few just to make sure.

Thank you for MCing. I'm off to bed but will get everything in order in the morning.

I've looked at both links and the title pages are identical so we should be OK with the archive.org link you provided.

Hi Jo,
Well it took a bit, and I originally made a mistake on the file numbering, but I got it all sorted out. If it looks good to you then we are ready for Readers Wanted.

Hi Jo,
I placed an ad in Listeners Wanted. I'll PL until someone else volunteers as DPL. When you have a moment please "sticky" the ad. viewtopic.php?f=21&t=62022
Thank you! :D

I'm willing to give a try at PL. I'll be happy to take on the next couple of sections when they are recorded.

Hi Tom,
I'm so happy to have you here. After you PL a couple of sections please let me know if you would like to DPL the rest of the project.

I'm not certain if you have PLed before. If you haven't you might want to check out some of the videos Phil made for new PLers. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Instructional_Videos#Proof_Listening_Videos

Please let me know if you have any questions along the way.

Be well,
Linny

Did someone say, "philosophy?" I'll restrain myself and ask for just Sections 4 and 27, but there are other good ones. Glad to see this one picked up.
