The Life of Oscar Wilde by Robert Sherard (1861 - 1943).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/the-life-of-oscar-wilde-by-robert-sherard/
Robert Sherard was Oscar Wilde's friend of 20 years and first biographer. The Life of Oscar Wilde was the second of his four biographies of the Irish playwright and wit. ( Rob Board)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/lifeofoscarwilde00sheriala
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Seeing as I just finished recording the first of Robert Sherard's four (!) biographies of Oscar Wilde, I thought I might as well get stuck into the second. And what better day to start than Wilde's 160th birthday? :birthday:

Yes thanks, Carolin. I think I will leave it for a while, until I have a few more chapters uploaded. And if someone comes along in the meantime, that's great too!

Thanks, Dave! Good to have you on board.

I'm going to try to get through this as fast as I can, but, realistically, it's going to take me at least 8 months. Sherard's often confusing prose and long sentences (not to mention the French and German he chucks in there) means it takes me a while to stumble through a recording. Anyway, fair warning! I'll try not to leave too long an interval between chapters. And, by the same token, no worries if you can't PL right away.

I just finished listening to Oscar Wilde: The Story of an Unhappy Friendship. I think you did a fabulous job reading the book, Rob, and I look forward to listening to this one. If you need any help with DPL'ing, I'd be happy to be Dave's second.

Thanks, Michele!

In due course I will get around to recording the next volume of Sherard's Wilde biogs, and will probably start another Wilde project before long. Will PM you when I am good to go.

Very good! Thank you. I'm looking at maybe solo-ing one mentioned in the previous book: The White Slaves Of England. I do like Robert Sherard's writing style, and the subject interests me, as I'm so tired of my young college friends saying things like "Life is just getting harder and harder, people worse and worse off", as they lounge about staring at their smart phones and sipping their Star Bucks or slurping their Smoothie Kings. They need to be made aware of how things were in "the good old days". :)
