Pamela Volume 2 by Samuel Richardson (1689 - 1761).

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog here: https://librivox.org/pamela-volume-2-by-samuel-richardson/

Quote:
Pamela, tells the story of a 15-year old maidservant named Pamela Andrews, whose country landowner master, Mr. B, makes unwanted advances towards her after the death of his mother. He abducts her, locks her up in one of his estates, and attempts to seduce and rape her. She rejects him but starts to realise that she is falling in love with him. She then attempts to build a relationship with him and to fit in with upper class society. This is a continuation of "Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded". ( Michele Eaton )

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/12958

    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

    6. Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

      Save files as
      128 kbps MP3
      pamelavolume2_##_richardson_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. pamelavolume2_01_richardson_128kb.mp3)
    10. Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
      • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
        Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
      • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: maryannspiegel
      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
      • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Michele,

I'm trying to figure out the "volume 2" aspect of this project. Is it a continuation of the story in this text? http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/6124 / https://librivox.org/pamela-by-samuel-richardson/

I guess I'm confused because PG 6124 doesn't mention that it is volume 1. So is PG 6124 both volume 1 and 2? Or is it volume 1 and PG 12958 completes the story . . .

MaryAnn

butting in
my research into this lead to my post in the "multi volume works " in book suggestions

Quote:
Pamela by Samuel Richardson NB Vol. 1 was published as a complete book - then later he published a sequel which he called Volume 2 so the book as stands is a finished work.
text : http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/12958
Already in catalogue : http://librivox.org/pamela-by-samuel-richardson/
What remains to be recorded : Volume 2
Word Count Vol. 2: 215,048 words, 103 Letters

Do you think we could just call it "Pamela - A Sequel " ?

Anne

Hmmm.

The wikipedia page says
Quote:
Given the lax copyright laws at the time, many "unofficial" sequels were written and published without Richardson's consent. There were also several satires, the most famous being An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews by Henry Fielding, published under the pseudonym "Mr. Conny Keyber". Shamela portrays the protagonist as an amoral social climber who attempts to seduce "Squire Booby" while feigning innocence to manipulate him into marrying her. Another important satire was The Anti-Pamela; or Feign’d Innocence Detected (1741) by Eliza Haywood. Although not technically a satire, the Marquis de Sade's Justine is generally perceived as a critical response to Pamela, due in part to its subtitle, "The Misfortunes of Virtue".

I suppose if we call this "a sequel" and leave the author as Richardson, then it's clear that it is not one of the unauthorized sequels.

Maybe Michele can add something to the book summary to say that it is a continuation of "Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded". I guess part of the problem may be PG's publishing the first volume without any indication that it was volume 1 of 2.

I have edited the summary to add that this is a continuation as you suggested. How would you like me to note the title. Are we happy to leave it as volume 2 or shall I change it a sequel don't mind either way. Thanks

I like what you did with the summary. When we catalog, I'll make the cross reference a link to the earlier project on LV. And with that, I think it is OK to leave it as "volume 2".

Your MW is set up.

MaryAnn

btw, seems he had so much success with the first book that he went overboard on the number of letters in volume 2! From 37 to 104 is a huge jump.

That's great thanks MaryAnn. I know I was a bit shocked when I saw the amount of letters. I will probably have to add some other sections as well. I did the word counts and there are two long letters one is 10,000 words and the other is 15,000 words so I will have to split them up into smaller chunks. Total contrast to some others which are only 100 words long. Very bizarre. Thanks for your help on this. :9:

Michele,
Please fill out the rest of the MW when you get a chance so that we can move this off the launch pad.
Thanks.
