Demos, A Story Of English Socialism by George Robbert Gissing (1857 - 1903)

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalog: https://librivox.org/demos-a-story-of-english-socialism-by-george-gissing/
"Richard Mutimer is delighted to inherit a large fortune. As a socialist, he means to use it well: he will open a factory in which workers would be treated well, he will advance his party's causes through his own wealth... At least, so he thinks. But reality may be far different. This novel raises more questions than answers. How much should money play in the marriage market, or can love have a prominent place? Can a man who gained power remain a socialist? This book is not only about political unrest. It is a story of a man who changes, for better or worse, and all the forces that shape him. Like other works by Gissing, it describes the London slums in the 19th century, the conditions of the working class, and a few families (some dysfunctional and some great). It was a favourite of George Orwell's, who developed some of Gissing's earlier themes in his own works. It is also reminiscent of works by authors such as Anthony Trollope. It is the only novel by Gissing which was adapted into film." ( Stav Nisser)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? 01.01.2017. We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4309
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Note: There are two chapters in this book with the same number: XXVI, apparently a numbering error in the printed edition, and the audiobook follows the same numbering.

That's it, window is full and we are open for claims. However, I would request that we remain in the new project's forum for another two days to see if we can catch a dpl. From my expirience, it is harder to catch a dpl later. Thanks,
Stav.

Oh, I'll sign myself up as the DPL! I will definitely enjoy it!

About the text, I see that there are two chapters numbered XXVI, 26, apparently a mistake in the printed editions at the time, but I suggest we also keep this numbering in the audiobook, so as to be more true to the original source, and also less confusing for the readers, and for those listeners who read along with the text. What do you think?

You are fortunate to dpl this book. It is in interesting read. I do not know. I feel it would be contusing with the 3 tags. That is why I did not stay true to the original text in that. However, I am not a tecnocal expert and would love to know if I am wrong.

Indeed after chapter 26, the section number will not coincide with the chapter number, but that is not a problem technically, so we can follow the same numbering as in the book, and I'll just make it Chapter XXVIa and Chapter XXVIb or something at cataloguing.
I'll go ahead and re-number the Chapter titles in the Magic Window, and if it looks good to you when you have checked it, we can move to Readers Wanted :)

We can move to readers wanted. I still think it is strange to have two chapter 26s. But I understand your point.

Yes, it really is strange, but an oddity we'd better keep the same, I think. Let's see how it goes.
We're in Readers Wanted!
