In Desert and Wilderness by Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846 - 1916). Translated by Max Anthony Drezmal (1867 - 1947)

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/in-desert-and-wilderness-by-henryk-sienkiewicz/

Volunteers outside the USA: Max Anthony Drezmal died in 1947. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies. Please note this IS in the public domain in Australia.

Quote:
In Desert and Wilderness is a novel for children by Polish author and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Henryk Sienkiewicz. It tells the story of two children, Staś Tarkowski and Nell Rawlinson, and their adventures as they cross the African desert and jungle. During the journey they face lions, leopards and malaria, make friends with desert tribespeople and an elephant, and learn about some harsh realities of life. An unusual "coming of age" story! (Summary by Beth Thomas)

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/30365
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Author's name pronunciation is here: http://uploads.librivox.org/xx-nonproject/sienkiewicz.mp3

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    6. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

      Set your recording software to:
      Channels: 1 (Mono)
      Bit Rate: 128 kbps
      Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

    7. DURING recording:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
      START of recording (Intro)
      • "Part [One or Two], Chapter [number] of In Desert and Wilderness. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
      • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
      • Say:
"In Desert and Wilderness, by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Translated by Max Anthony Drezmal [Chapter]"

      END of recording
      • At the end of the section, say:
        "End of [Part, Chapter]"
      • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of In Desert and Wilderness, by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Translated by Max Anthony Drezmal"

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

    8. AFTER recording
      Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

      Save files as
      128 kbps MP3
      indesertandwilderness_##_sienkiewicz_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. indesertandwilderness_01_sienkiewicz_128kb.mp3)

ID3 V2 tags (To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Please ignore ID3 tags; they will be filled in automatically.

    9. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
      • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
        https://librivox.org/login/uploader
        Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
      • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rapunzelina - Rapunzelina
      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
      • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

      Any questions?
      Please post below

Hi. I can PL it :) . I sent you the spreadsheet.
As I said, I read it about 20 years ago, so I can't recall many Polish names there that would require recording a sample for you to follow. Still, if you've read it, Beth, and have found some names unfamiliar, please, let me know. As the book is set in Egypt in the years of the Suez Canal construction (and - more importantly- the Mahdi uprising) the characters are likely to come from several countries with Polish ones being an exception rather than the rule.

Also, note that as the book was written over 100 years ago, its portrayal of black characters (most importantly Kali, if that name has been retained in the translation) may be considered rather condescending by today's standards.

Several quotations from the book have become part of everyday language in Poland :)

Excellent! I've got the word counts from Piotrek, so I'll start filling out the MW.

Hello

The name is Philippe (but login dumbo).

I’m a newcomer, not having recorded anything yet,
so I would like to start out with a short text.

On the Gutenberg Project I see :
Part First VI
Starting with “Messrs. Rawlinson and Tarkowski actually expected the children. . .”
1 745 words
9 717 car

In the Magic Window, is that : Section 6 - Part 1, Chapter 6 - 1580 words
?

If so, could I try than one out ?
Do I download the text from Gutenberg ?

Thank you.
@+
Philippe.

Welcome! I see you've done a 1-minute-test, so that's all good!

To create a login for you, I need your full (catalogue) name. This is for when you read your voice credit "read by..." You can call yourself whatever you like. Some people use their real name, their login name or something else. I use my real name (Beth Thomas) even though my login is Elizabby. Logins must be unique, but obviously real names are not necessarily. ;)

Yep, that's it. Read from there to "With God's help!" answered Mr. Rawlinson. which is the end of Chapter 6.

It is up to you if you prefer to read online, download, print or whatever. As you feel comfortable - Gutenberg is all public domain so help yourself!

I've put your claim in the Magic Window (MW) but I need your full details to create a proper reader file for you. This is a good project to start with - the chapters are nice and short! :9:

Be aware that the details for the "intro" and "outro" and formatting, uploading, etc, are all in the first post. If you've done the 1-min-test you are familiar with most of it, but the details vary with each project. If you have any questions post here and I'll do my best to answer them!

Beth Thomas (Book Coordinator)
