The Deluge vol.1 by Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846 - 1916) . Translated by Jeremiah Curtin (1835 - 1906).

Quote:
The Deluge (Polish: Potop) is a historical novel by the Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz, published in 1886. It is the second volume of a three-volume series known to Poles as "the Trilogy," having been preceded by With Fire and Sword (Ogniem i mieczem, 1884) and followed by Fire in the Steppe (Pan Wołodyjowski, 1886). The novel tells a story of a fictional Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth soldier and noble Andrzej Kmicic and shows a panorama of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Swedish invasion of Poland known in the Polish tradtion as „Potop” (hence the title).

Kmita is a patriot who, nevertheless, unexpectedly and unwittingly finds himself on the wrong side of the conflict as a new war starts to ravage the already weakened Commonwealth. This decision costs him dearly as his beloved Olenka now sees him as a traitor.
This is an epic panorama of a country that is torn not only by a war with the external enemy, but also by a struggle with unscrupulous nobles who use their country's plight as an opportunity to magnify their power and zone of influence even if that means siding with the enemy. On the other hand we also see valiant soldiers, who, both with their swords and their wits, fight to expel the invading army. (Summary by Wikipedia and Piotr Nater)

BELOW ARE SHORT NOTES ON POLISH PRONUNCIATION. PLEASE TRY TO FOLLOW THESE RULES
Polish c = English ts
Polish ch = English h
Polish cz = English ch
Polish j = English y
Polish rz, ż = as j in French
Polish sz = English sh
Polish szcz = English shch
Polish w = English v

ALSO, PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME OF THE CHAPTERS CONSIST OF MORE THAN ONE SECTION. MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE LIST IN THE MAGIC WINDOW FOR DETAILS WHEN CLAIMING.

  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37198
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

So, after some soul-searching I'm finally starting my first group project :)

Some remarks:
This book will actually have two introductory sections and the actual chapters will only begin with "003".
I'll also post a short guide to pronunciation soon. It would be cool if people could at least have glance at it to make the names sound consistent throughout the book.

I've been wondering how I knew the author and of course he wrote Quo Vadis - I've read the book years ago and seen the film ditto
All set up - I've set out the title field in the MW - it is much safer to have the section number there although it looks reduntant
I think you mentioned word counts - so I have put one in in the right place . Think that is all - I am off to bed , will check in the morning

Have fun

Anne

Sure thing  I added you.

Meanwhile I also added short notes on pronunciation. It would be cool if people tried to follow them. Yeah, I know the formatting sucks. I'll try to fix it.

Don't look for mine too soon - I'm imagining it will be a week at the earliest as I will be travelling. Plenty of time for me to brush up on pronunciation.

Hi - can I have section 03 (Chapter III)?

Also, regarding pronunciation: Piotrek, I'm wondering if/where your notes apply, because it looks like the translator already changed all the spelling into more English-friendly versions. For example, the town of Lubicz is now "Lyubich" in the English text, Pan Wolodyjowski is changed to "Volodyovski", and so forth.... or am I missing something?

Thanks for claiming. Section 3 is yours.

As to the pronunciation, I've been thinking how to solve this situaton. The reason why I put the link to text-to-speech service is so that poeple don't have to try and re-construct every word sound by sound by themselves with the help of notes only, as I guess that even with the translator's guidelines this can yield different results. However, as you've just noticed the translator provided guidelines for pronunication which the text-to-speech thing ignores as it follows standard English pronunciation rules. I'm beginning to think that the only way out from this problem is for me to put some recording on-line for people to follow. I think I'll do it. That can take time, though...

EDIT: I've taken down the link to the text-to-speech thing so as not to confuse people.

Hi - I'm editing Section 03 - if it's not too greedy, can I have Sections 04 and 05 too? That way I can "finish off" Pan Kmita's band of cut-throats with the same voice characterizations :)

In recording chapter 3 I followed the "rule" that the main accent for persons and places is always on the second-to-last syllable. Thus: Bil-LE-vich, KUL-vyets, RE-kuts, SMO-lensk, and so on. Is that right, Piotrek? If I am all wrong about this, let me know ...
