The Promulgation of Universal Peace: Vol. I by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá ‘Abbás (1844 - 1921) .
“Two years before the crash of world war shook the continents and upheaved oceans,” Howard MacNutt relates. “‘Abdu’l-Bahá ‘Abbás visited the United States of America proclaiming the Glad-Tidings of Universal Peace and the oneness of the world of humanity. In his message he reviewed social, religious and political conditions of the nations, foretold clearly the impending clash and conflict of militarism, summoning mankind to the standard of divine guidance upraised in this cycle of the cycles by the manifestation and teachings of Bahá’u’lláh. His visit extending from April to December 1912 covered an itinerary across the continent and return, involving an extraordinary and incredible expenditure of energy on the part of one who at the threshold of three score years and ten had spent practically his whole lifetime in exile and imprisonment for the cause of God. This treasury of his words is a compilation of informal talks and extempore discourses delivered in Persian and Arabic, interpreted by proficient linguists who accompanied him, and taken stenographically in both Oriental and Occidental tongue. Upon the day of his arrival in New York City he said ‘It is my purpose to set forth in America the fundamental principles of the revelation and teachings of Bahá’u’lláh. It will then become the duty of the Bahá’ís of this country to give these principles unfoldment and application in the minds, hearts and lives of the people.’” (Summary by Howard MacNutt)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? 5 December 2013
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://archive.org/details/promulgationofun01abdu
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

No reason for you to keep them all "here", if it would be tidier to re-/move them. I marked your sections with #, and the three marked with * are those I would like to volunteer to read, if I may.

For clarity, merely, I restate: please assign me to sections 05, 14 and 30, whenever you're ready.

I don't mean to be a nuisance, but seeing "promulgationvoli_##_.mp3" (where the file-name ends with an underscore) just looks strange to my less-newbie-than-before eyes. Please reassure me, at your leisure, if you would.

Hi cynm1788,

Welcome to the project! I didn't expect to get volunteers so quickly so am very happy for your interest. Indeed, the file name is unorthodox but I had only just set up the project so had not yet checked everything in detail as of the last time I looked at it.

It should read promulgationvoli_##_abbas.mp3

I will edit the main post accordingly and sign you up for the sections you've requested.

Regards,
Nicholas J. Bridgewater

Cheers, Nicholas-

I've been pushing myself at projects in a half-blind near-panic...for a month. I think I'm starting to slow down, in a good way. Now, when I confront a new INTRO/OUTRO, if I can, I sneak a listen at someone else's recording, and rattle off something analogous. Can't yet do that here, so I'm posting another semi-intelligible pseudo-question: this text uses lots of "chapter" sorts of numbers, and there's plenty of words in the Magic Window to describe the business; nevertheless, in the case of "sections" containing more than one "chapter" (of which I've taken two), I'm underwilling to second-guess your preferences.

As my concrete example, "Section 14": should the INTRO begin "Chapters Twelve and Thirteen of the Promulgation [&c.]", seeing how there are a few "chapters" designated "XII" and "XIII" spread throughout the book, and it could make as much, or little, sense (to a listener) were I to say "Chapter 14" (which is actually the "Section" number)?

So, whether that's "concrete" or merely "oatmeal", I'm happy to await follow-up, in whatever form. Not to put you on the spot, but it is your call. :)

{and just never mind that i feel i oughta be *done* with at least one section by now}

Thanks for the welcome, and hopes I haven't already worn it out.

Hi, just read the section number in the intro and then at the beginning of each chapter you can read whatever title is contained in the original book. I hope that makes sense. :)

BTW, just to let you know, a related project (by the same author) has just had some sections freed up so if you're interested... it's here:

I hope this makes sense, too:

Section: 14 – XII. April 25, 1912, at 1700 18th Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. XIII. April 25, 1912, at 1700 18th Street, N. W., Washington, D. C.

Forewarned: in addition to the other ‘Abdu’l-Bahá ‘Abbás project to which you directed my attention, you may also catch me sneaking up to that [Kühner's] Greek Grammar, sooner or sooner.

Great! Let me know if you want to make any other contributions here. We don't yet have a Proof Listener, but I'm hoping one will come along soon.

With regards to the Greek Grammar, your contributions would be most welcome as that project has dragged on for quite a while. :)

Best wishes,

Hi,
I listened to the three sections ready for PL.
05 - heard "chapte"r not "section" at beginning of intro and @ end / PL OK
14- & 30- same situation.

In projects where the book doesn't contain regular chapters I think a lot of people find the script for the intro/outro confusing. In the projects I've been BC or Solo and this happens I have been altering the script in the first post to say "Section" instead of "Chapter" so that I can keep it straight.

Indeed, it needs to say Section as these are not chapters. The book actually doesn't have chapters, but is a collection of talks. I've edited the intro in the first post. I didn't think of doing that before, but it makes sense to do so.

Taking these one at a time:

File already exists: the original file has been renamed.

Sure, changing "Chapter" to "Section" ought to be straightforward, maybe even trivial, but I've changed around my microphone and I don't know how to ask Audacity to make "today" sound like "last week". I'll stick with it until we work it all out, and it may be that you'll accept this first revision…or have some advice as to how I might tweak it into better conformity.
