Converts from Infidelity, Volume 1, by Andrew Crichton (1790 - 1855)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/converts-from-infidelity-volume-1-by-andrew-crichton/
Converts from infidelity; or, Lives of eminent individuals who have renounced libertine principles and sceptical opinions, and embraced Christianity.

…Some of the more generally known, and best accredited examples of these conversions, the reader of the following volumes will find, in the Lives of Eminent Individuals who have renounced libertine principles and sceptical opinions, and embraced Christianity. Such narratives may be regarded as interesting in themselves, but more especially important, as furnishing the most authentic testimonies to the truths of revealed religion; and setting forth the decided concessions in their favour, which have been extorted under circumstances so impressive, and from witnesses whose competency or credibility cannot be doubted.

Among the Converts here selected are to be found men of all ranks and professions in life, laymen and clergymen, statesmen, philosophers, historians, poets, and physicians; many of whom were not less distinguished for their extensive acquirements in learning and science, than for the homage they paid to religion. They exhibit instances of various attainments in knowledge, and of all descriptions of intellectual vigour,— of men who cannot be charged with acting from hypocrisy, or under the influence of prejudice, — who have been deeply versed in the philosophy of nature, and accustomed to the most cautious forms of scientific experiment, — and who, had the evidences of Revelation been weak, or founded on error, were in every respect qualified, and from the character of their previous habits and opinions, would have been most eager to detect and expose the imposture. I will DPL this.

The summary is from the preface and the html paragraph breaks are intentional.

It's yours!

It looks like it's been a while since you've submitted a section. Do you need to do another 1 minute test to check you current recording setup?

I saw that the Preface needed a PL!
All perfect except at 10:02 I hear "minds"; it reads "mists".

Thank you
Welcome to Librivox, beejr!
It would be great to have you record section 5 for this project (Converts from Infidelity). It looks like you've just passed your 1 minute test recording which means you are ready to go. Don't forget in all future recordings to make any changes that were suggested when you did the test recording (eg: if you needed to amplify, you'll need to do that for every section you submit).

In order to assign a section to you in the Magic Window (MW) of this project, I've entered you into the database of readers. Your reader page is accessible here and a list of your assigned sections is here (you might want to bookmark it). LV readers appear under both their forum username and their 'catalog name' - at the moment both are your forum username. Here's an example of what it would look like if you choose something different. Some people use their real name, a pseudonym or just a repeat of their forum username. You might prefer privacy or to use it as an opportunity to advertise yourself as a narrator. You can change your catalog name by posting a thread in this forum and an admin will help you out. Your claim is confirmed - you have two months to submit it. Looking forward to hearing your section and have you help out with this project!

Some common questions that new readers ask:
 • Footnotes: They are optional. You can read all, some or none. An easy way to mark them is to say 'footnote' then read the footnote then say 'end footnote'.
 • Quotes: You can mark these by saying 'quote' then reading the quote and then saying 'end quote'. You can decide whether to say quote at all - sometimes it will be clear from context. I'd suggest saying it if the quotation spans multiple sentences.
 • Non-English phrases: We do have to read them. You could 1) pronounce it however you want 2) post in this thread and ask for someone to record it for you so you can either mimic it or splice it into your own recording 3) try Forvo for individual words or the sound icon on Google Translate for a text to speech version to copy.
 • Roman numerals: Read these as their corresponding number.
 • Abbreviations: You can choose to expand these or not to. You could say 'e.g' or 'for example'.
 • Heading numbering: Sometimes books use roman numerals and digits for two different levels of headings. I think a good solution to this is to say 'first, second' etc. for roman numeral headings (I, II etc.) and 'one, two' etc. for digit headings (1, 2 etc.).
