In this chapter, there are large monetary values, e.g. £1,600,000,000. I plan to say this figure as "one thousand six hundred million pounds" according to the way a billion would have been calculated in Britain at that time (being 1,000,000 x 1,000,000.)paullawleyjones wrote: ↑February 2nd, 2022, 6:31 pm I would like to claim

next, please.

Also, for our American narrators, you may see money values like this: 3s 6d. This is said as "three shillings and six pence." Old British money was L = pounds, S = shillings, and D = pence.
Further, other British pronunciations you might come across...
- Derby = dar - bee
- Derbyshire = dar - bi - sher (When 'shire' is on the end of the name of a shire, it is pronounced 'sher,' not 'shy - er')
- Lieutenant = lef - tenant (Yeah, I know this one doesn't make sense.)
The author's name is pronounced "buck - 'n" not "byoo - c'n."

Thanks much, Paul! Section 4 is loaded for Jim to proof, 42-43 are assigned for you, and I've put your pronunciation/money tips on our initial post so they won't get lost in the scroll.paullawleyjones wrote: ↑February 3rd, 2022, 12:28 amIn this chapter, there are large monetary values, e.g. £1,600,000,000. Hi, Sailorly!
Welcome to LibriVox, and thank you for helping with this project. I've assigned both sections for you.
These chapters can be long and much more work to record than other books. Since you're just starting out, I want you to feel welcome, but also know that nobody will think negative at all if you decide these are more work than you'd like to do yet, and you can simply ask for them to be taken off your assignments.
Glad to have you onboard!
