Consuelo, by George Sand (1804 - 1876)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/consuelo-by-george-sand/
This roman à clef follows the musical adventures of Consuelo, a gifted singer under the tutelage of the composer Nicola Porpora. After encountering betrayal in her home city of Venice, she goes to stay with a family of nobles in an isolated castle in Bohemia and teach singing to the baroness who lives there. It is there that she meets Count Albert, a troubled young man who experiences regressions to past lives. He is strangely drawn to her, but she, though moved with pity for him, is unsure what to think of him. She then sets out for Vienna to meet with Porpora again and on the way befriends a young Joseph Haydn. The two do their best to skirt intrigue and peril during their journey while Consuelo engages in soul-searching to determine who Count Albert is to her. (Summary by Scarbo)

For the time being, I'll need a little more time than usual to PL sections that come in on weekdays. Thanks for your patience.

I'd like to DPL for myself, except for any chapters I record, of course.

May I read chapter 1?

No translator is listed, do you know who translated this? I need to know to check PD status. The publication date listed is that of the original French edition.

There is no translator mentioned in the book, and this book was published in 1891. I guess it would be possible that the translator lived into the late 1950's.

Certainly, thank you for claiming!

I did a little investigation and still wasn't able to find out who the translator is, but I did find this edition, which was published in 1847 and appears to have identical text to the one I'm using. It's highly unlikely that the translator isn't PD for you in that case. I'll see if I can find out anything more.

It's very curious - if I'd gone to the effort of translating an 800-page book, I sure would want credit for it!

Thanks for trying to discover this. I think at that time translators were often not credited although it does seem a bit unfair :hmm:

Many times the translator was on staff at the publishing house and wasn't credited.

I did find an two other editions on hathitrust

One translated by Francis G Shaw 1809-1882
https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/011546747

and another translated by Fayette Robinson -1859
https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/011563358

In either case these are both PD worldwide, so the edition you are using is most likely as well.

Anyway, I'd like Chapter 3, please. :}

Thank you, Jo! I thought I'd found evidence earlier today that the text I'm using is the Fayette Robinson translation, but it doesn't match the Hathitrust link you found. Oh well, like you said, it's still most likely safe for readers who have to go by the 1950 death date.

And chapter 3 is all yours! Thank you for claiming!

Thank you for section 3! It sounds great. The only note I have is that at 8:47 (p. 16), "ten rebellions against method," you say "ten rebellious against method."
