All: For the sake of standardization, I want to specify the pronunciation of Altruria and Altrurian to be used in this project. The name of the island, Altruria, is derived from the word altruism. So, for purposes of this project, we will use the pronunciations [al-TROOR-ee-uh] and [al-TROOR-ee-uhn]. Thank you for your support!

I'm sure there is an answer to this somewhere else, but it takes time that I'm hoping to save by asking here. If the first two chapters are recorded in a female voice, would it be better if we stayed with a female voice throughout? Also, if the first reader pronounces a name a particular way (related to the Altruria pronunciation post), should different readers go with that pronunciation? Thanks.

Hi,
I'm not the book coordinator or meta coordinator here, but in general, we don't have such requirements--anyone can join in a group project. After all, there is such a wide range of voices, and you can never match perfectly; readers can be male or female, young or old, British or American or German or French or Russian or Chinese (etc), speaking slow or fast, etcetera etcetera. Basically the only time you might find something that's only open to 1 gender is in plays or dramatic works, where everyone acts out 1 role and it can help the listener's understanding to have gender-matched readers. And then it will be specified.

For your second question, regarding names--as I've just recorded it, I can tell you that there are no names in section 1, other than "Altruria" and "Altrurian", the pronunciation of which Jeff has posted about above. :)

Haha, aww :9: I just really love everything about books, and it's such a satisfying idea that I can turn my love of reading into an enjoyable experience for whoever might be interested in listening.
Since this project can use a bit more of a boost, shall I claim chapter 3 as well? :)

Can I join in the fun? I would like to read chapter 5.

Is there any specific way you want me to pronounce the names "Mrs Makely" and "Mr Homos" ?

Sure, Anna, no problem! I have you down for Chapter 5. I'd suggest the pronunciations ['meyk-lee] (like the verb 'to make') and [ˈhō-mōs]. Obviously, we need to leave the 's' of Homos unvoiced and avoid a plural [z] sound, so that it doesn't sound the same as the offensive slur. 8-)

I should probably have created a separate post just to address that issue, because obviously I'd have to reject any recording with the pronunciation [ˈhō-mōz] used over and over again...

Thanks so much for volunteering to help with this project!
