Then and Now by John McCrae (1872 - 1918)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/then-and-now-by-john-mccrae/
The reminiscence of the poet on a stormy evening.
(Summary by David Lawrence)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: exvyQVcL

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Then and Now by John McCrae, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
Beneath her window in the fragrant night
I half forget how truant years have flown
Since I looked up to see her chamber-light,
Or catch, perchance, her slender shadow thrown
Upon the casement; but the nodding leaves
Sweep lazily across the unlit pane,
And to and fro beneath the shadowy eaves,
Like restless birds, the breath of coming rain
Creeps, lilac-laden, up the village street
When all is still, as if the very trees
Were listening for the coming of her feet
That come no more; yet, lest I weep, the breeze
Sings some forgotten song of those old years
Until my heart grows far too glad for tears.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Hi, here is my reading:

https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/thenandnow_mcrae_bkbd_128kb.mp3 1:04

I think this poem is so interesting because different readers would have different people in mind and reasons to speak it.
