This is well read with no corrections, however, it does not pass the checker. The volume is too low at 80.6. It needs to be at least 86, and we aim for around 89. You can use the amplify function to raise it, but sometimes that makes the background noise level go up too high as well. For future reference, check the gain on the microphone in Audacity, sometimes it mysteriously resets itself lower (in my experience). I usually have mine set around 94 so I can keep the microphone a ways away from my mouth and reduce the popping on the Ps.

If you haven't downloaded Checker, you can find it here: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker . It's a handy little utility specifically made to check files against Librivox standards. I run all the files I record through it, and if I make any fixes based on the results, I run it again before I upload to make sure that the changes went through. Once you have installed Checker, open it up and you will have a little window. To run your files through, just click and drag the .mp3 version of your recording from its folder to the Checker window and drop it there. The Validation tab will tell you whether the file passed or failed, or passed with warnings. The Information tab shows you your volume level, length of recording etc.

Also, when you re-upload, make sure that the file name is correct, the chapter number should be 03 and not 3.

Once you have re-uploaded the corrected file, mention it in the thread so I can do the spot check.

Thanks!

Colleen
Hi Colleen,

Thank you for the tip about presetting the db on audacity. I followed your advice on a different project and that made a big difference and it was nice not having to speak so close to the mic.

Here is the update link with the correct section numbering:

https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/therainbowbook_03_spielmann_128kb.mp3

I downloaded the checking and it says this "passed".

Thanks for your tips and time!

YES! So sorry for not seeing this. Once again, email notifications did not work for this project so I knew nothing about it!

Hi,
I fixed the noise reduction and ran it through the Checker for Section#8. Here is the new recording:

Hi,

I checked the file and it was still passing with a warning that the noise was a little high. Checker read it as 47.9 which is only a slight reduction. After you take your sample and before you run noise reduction, make sure you select the entire file by using CTRL-A so that the noise reduction runs on all of it. I tested it by downloading the file and running noise reduction and it should reduce it down to below 30, which is a good target to aim for. Also, since your volume is on the low end (86.1 - we aim for 86-92 with 89 being the sweet spot), when you run the noise reduction it reduces the overall volume to under 86 and so will get a fail message for that. So when you run the noise reduction, while you have the whole file highlighted using CTRL-A, pull down the Effect menu, select Amplify, and raise the volume by 1 or 2 decibels. That will get you in range on both the background noise and the volume.

Let me know when you reupload so I can spot check again!

Thanks,
Colleen
