I should have checked the author's name in the LibriVox catalog before I began recording, because when I did check, after completing my recording, I found that Maria Kasper had recorded the entire survey for the 14th anniversary collection! Oh well; it's interesting stuff. The excerpt I read consists of pages 7-10, comprising the sections titled "The Field of Work," and "The Limited Range of Choice."

Section 1 and Section 2 are PL OK.

When I was reading section 2 about occupations for young girls, I couldn't help but think about the "radium girls" who worked at what was supposedly a good factory job...except for the price they had to pay.

Thanks for the PL, Mary! Ottawa, Illinois, not too far from where I live, was one of the places that had a radium watch dial factory. I sure wouldn't want to live there, even now. According to this article, girls as young as 11 to 13 were hired to paint the watch dials.
