Miniver Cheevy, by Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869 - 1935)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/miniver-cheevy-by-edwin-arlington-robinson/
"Miniver Cheevy" is a narrative poem written by Edwin Arlington Robinson and first published in The Town down the River in 1910. The poem relates the story of a hopeless romantic who spends his days thinking about what might have been if only he had been born earlier in time. (Summary by Wikipedia)
Each fortnight a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This fortnight's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Miniver Cheevy by Edwin Arlington Robinson, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn,
Grew lean while he assailed the seasons;
He wept that he was ever born,
And he had reasons.

Miniver loved the days of old
When swords were bright and steeds were prancing;
The vision of a warrior bold
Would set him dancing.

Miniver sighed for what was not,
And dreamed and rested from his labors;
He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot
And Priam's neighbors.

Miniver mourned the ripe renown
That made so many a name so fragrant;
He mourned Romance, now on the town,
And Art, a vagrant.

Miniver loved the Medici,
Albeit he had never seen one;
He would have sinned incessantly
Could he have been one.

Miniver cursed the commonplace,
And eyed a khaki suit with loathing;
He missed the mediaeval grace
Of iron clothing.

Miniver scorned the gold he sought,
But sore annoyed he was without it;
Miniver thought and thought and thought
And thought about it.

Miniver Cheevy, born too late,
Scratched his head and kept on thinking;
Miniver coughed, and called it fate,
And kept on drinking.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

My little 'Miniver' coming in at 1:37. I keep forgetting how fun (and relatively quick) these poetry entries are! Let me know if I forgot something.

Yes. It started the 13th, so a fortnight from then would be the 27th.

I forgot to add the due date. Thanks for the gentle reminder. ;) I'll do that now!
