MadSci75 wrote: June 22nd, 2021, 8:16 pm Hello! I am brand new to LibriVox, and this is my first recording. I've always been a fan of old science fiction short stories...here's my attempt:

"The Eyes Have It", author Philip K. Dick
Audio URL: https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf080_eyeshaveit_dick_jlc128kb.mp3
Text URL: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/31516/31516-h/31516-h.htm
Duration: 6 minutes 50 seconds
For the catalog, I'm unsure whether it's typical to use real names or user IDs, but I'd prefer my real name (Jeremy Clark).

Since this is my first submission, I'd appreciate any feedback (positive or negative)!

Thanks!

MadSci75
Hi Jeremy,
The catalog is updated to have you as Jeremy Clark. It is a nice short short story to start with.
Thanks!

It takes a special skill set to nab a telepathic criminal committing the “perfect crime.” Does Captain of Detectives Howard Schnell have what it takes to get the job done? Let’s find out in this PsiFi/Detective story

Thanks Jeremy,

It is PL ok.

A good first recording.

There is slight bit of equipment noise in the back ground on the silence sections. You may want to do noise reduction on future submissions. It is ok as is so no need to make changes to this recording.

Otherwise sounds good :)

Lector, the recording is ok per checker,

But when I started listening there is a lot of background noise. Maybe you normalized to increase the sound before doing noise reduction?

I tried doing a couple of rounds of noise reduction on my copy, but that made it sound a bit wonky. I did not listen very long into it, I will do a full PL after you address the background noise.

Can you address the background noise, and resubmit?

James.

I never have been able to figure out why there's background noise in my recordings. I never have been able to get rid of it completely without messing up the rest of the audio. I think it's my computer that makes that noise. I had this problem with my old mic and I recently got a new one and the problem was still there. Here's my new version. I think I got the background noise pretty much gone, and the audio only gets wonky if the volume is loud, for me.

Hi,
We will use this one that is in PG for the source text cited: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1075
I don't think we have this one by Jack London. I'm glad you chose it.
Thank you for your story!

Just on minor technical issue, Volume is low at 85.7 Target range is 86 - 92, no other issues.

Can you correct the volume and resubmit?

Hi Lector and James,
I worked on the file and have it so that it passes the checker now without a horrible amount of distortion. Here is the link as another option.
https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf080_daytimestoppedmoving_buckner_lmm_128kb-test2.mp3

Lector, if you aren't using an external microphone, that decreases your sound quality. If it is the computer's hum, will it stop if you plug it in? Is the air conditioner on or some other white noise generator?
Phil's noise reduction video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2603zZhUUk
Phil's video on removing a hum:
http://youtu.be/Iz4QvQXkPPI
Maybe these will help. If you want to work on the file after watching these you may come up with something better than what I have.

Thanks,
-Amy

Hi Amy,

Can you tell me how you were able to get rid of the background noise so that it doesn't cause distortion?

It may be my AC, but I don't think my mic is sensitive enough to pick up on that. (It is an external mic.) I do this in my personal room, and I haven't been able to find a white noise generator. I think the problem might be that my computer is probably pretty old. I don't know if that could cause it to add background noise to my recording.
