Coffee Break Collection #032 -- WILDERNESS, by Various Authors (Lt).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/coffee-break-collection-032-wilderness-by-various/

This is the 32nd Coffee Break Collection, in which Librivox readers select and read stories or poems, fiction or non-fiction pieces of fifteen minutes' duration or less, suitable for short commutes and coffee breaks. The subject for this collection is WILDERNESS. The collection is full after 20 pieces have been submitted.
  • There is no need to pre-claim.

New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

Where do I find the text? Any Public Domain text is acceptable. Project Gutenberg is a good place to start.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prooflistening: DPL for this project is Michele Fry (msfry). Level is Special: I will read along with the text and notate significant discrepancies. (Message to new readers, be sure to edit and proof your own files before submitting.) See the Guide for Proof-listeners for further information.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

All set. I notice you have it set as "special PL" but you don't say what's special about it :hmm: The instructions for special PL are the same as for standard unless "the reader states otherwise".

"Chapter 2" from The Modern Babes in the Wood, or Summering in the Wilderness by H. Perry Smith, 1872

I don't know if you'll be allowed, or wish, to use this recording. It's just one chapter from a book, but is self-contained. I found it to be a fun read and I think others will, too.

I can’t see why it wouldn’t be allowed, so it comes down to whether or not Michele wishes to accept it

Here is a great reason to go to the Adirondacks. Isn't that near you, Kevin? And will you PL it for me?

I've travelled just outside the Adirondacks through lovely country, but all lowlands. Our North Woods here in Wisconsin are not quite as lovely, I hear, though I found it equally bracing, I'm sure.

Lovely reading. It is PL OK!

You say 'cheeks' where the text is actually 'the color of whose cheek,' but I see no reason to make a change.

Cheek, cheeks, I agree not worth fixing. I bet both cheeks matched! Thanks for that quick PL. :D

Please notice I opened Coffee Break #33 - GARDENING, today. Maybe you'll find something to add there too.

Babes is PL OK. Thanks for a very cute story, and a truthful one, which captures my frustration with mosquitoes completely, and I have had experience with gnats, fruit flies, roaches and horse flies. My remedy -- Windex. It kills the little ones dead in seconds, the larger ones in a minute or two. I keep a big bottle on hand to refill my sprayer bottles. It is fun to watch them frantically washing their faces until they give up and DIE!!!!!

Well, Kevin, you're the only one around that I can pick on to PL my story. When/if you get time, I'd appreciate it. And I have another one coming.

Hi, I'm new here and passed my 1-minute test. I would like to contribute but everything I see on Gutenberg for wilderness is quite long and I see you've specified 15 minutes. Does that mean read just a part of it? Thanks Laurie

Hi, Laurie, and welcome to Librivox. Yes, you can do excerpts, so long as you so state, and so long as the excerpt can stand on its own as a story. Many books have chapters that can stand alone, like mine already cited in this project, from Adventures in the Wilderness, or, Camp-life in the Adirondacks. You are welcome to choose material from books other people are reading from as well.

Be sure you don't read a story another reader has already contributed to the project (see the Magic Window on Page 1), but if you do, it can always be offered to another short story project. Nothing is wasted.
