Thanks Dale - I'm still hearing 'unwise' for 'otherwise' at 0.55 on this one - other edits all good.

I was entering the authors in the database, and noticed that this one is actually Arthur J. Burks. It really looks like Burke the way it's printed. As you're still making edits, I thought I'd mention it, in case you chose to make this small change in the recording and/or filename. I decided to mention it mainly because Arthur J. Burks is somewhat more widely known, since he even has a wiki page  But not really a problem if it remains as is. It will still be the correct name in the database. Thanks

Hello Group. For the stories from Weird Tales...

I would like to try something from Weird Tales.

Are you folks reading directly from the Internet Archive edition?

It is tough to read. Is there any way to copy and paste the text in "Word". I prefer reading from a hardcopy.

Just wunderin'

Thank you.

HI:

I have, on occasion, used "Free OCR"

https://www.onlineocr.net/

I can not guarantee that it is absolutely free of bugs, but I rely on Norton and my browser to catch them. You will have t download the file first, then use the OCR program (It doesn't seem to want to work on a "Net" source.

I suggest that you check the librivox published list to see if the thing you want to read has already been read. There are a lot of good stories in the three years that are out of copyright.

Good Hunting

When you say that it is hard to read, do you mean because of the page layout and you'd rather have it in Word to change fonts, size, etc, or because of the screen and you'd rather have it on a piece of paper?
Archive.org offers some download options (a menu on the right hand side).
In the download options, you can download the PDF and then print out the pages you want to have on paper. Or if you want to copy the text in Word you can choose the option Full Text to copy from, but I don't recommend that because it sometimes has OCR errors, like, if the type is not clear, it would make "chain" into a "chair" for example.

And to answer your question; personally, I read from the downloaded PDF on my screen. :)

Weird Tales published in 1925 and earlier are safely out of copyright.

Weird Tales published in 1925 and earlier are safely out of copyright.
I've read multiple stories from some of the earliest Weird Tales issues and yes, they can be hard to read! The cheap paper made the ink spread and the type can be very blurry. There is not a good way to import it into Word because even fairly clear print can have a lot of OCR errors and these are NOT clear print. What I have found works best for me is to open the document as a PDF and then download it using my tablet, then open it in Books (the ipad ebook app). Then I can zoom in as much as I need to to try to decipher extra blurry bits. I think trying to print out the pages of the PDF would add another level of fuzziness as printouts can be less sharp than screens.

The only other thing I can suggest is to try using the OCR text, copy it into Word and then hand edit it comparing word by word with the text on screen til you have a copy you are sure is close to the original, then print that out to read from. I've done that with a few extremely hard to read documents (haven't had to do it with Weird Tales, but the early WT issues are about the limit of what I would put up with reading directly) and it's very tedious tho it does make the actual recording go more smoothly since I'm very familiar with the ins and outs of the text!

Otherwise I would suggest trying different pulp magazines or even different WT issues - I do think WT gets a bit better after the first year or so of publication. The good thing is that in terms of public domain eligibility and the current border year being 1925, we are approaching the "golden age" of pulps and increasing numbers of issues will become available to use in our projects every year! There are also plenty of books of weird tales and ghost stories on Project Gutenberg for some far more easy to read texts.

Hope this helps a little!
