Myths and Legends Around the World - Collection 9, by Various

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/myths-and-legends-around-the-world-09/

This collection is dedicated to recordings of short mythical or legendary works which are in the Public Domain. The stories tell of legends, heroes, myths, and ancient lore from many different cultures. (Summary by Lynette Caulkins)
Please choose and record any short myth or legend that is a short story in the public domain. It may be from a stand-alone book or a single chapter from a book. For clarification of what it means for a work to be "in the public domain," see this section of the LibriVox Wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain. Try to stay with works that run less than 60 minutes. You may read up to 2 selections per volume in this collection. You may use 2 sections for one myth/legend if the story is too long for one section. Multiple versions of the same story are welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your topic already; we're happy to hear the version you found, too. :) Please note that in this collection we do not do reservations on sections, as is typically done with LibriVox group projects. If you wonder about the suitability or public domain status of a story you want to record, feel free to ask questions in the discussion before you do the work of a recording. If this collection fills before you are able to do that recording - No Worries! - the next collection will be open for you. :)

After 12 sections are submitted and approved, we will catalog the collection and make it available to the public.

Here is a list of sources that still have chapters available: Potential Sources for Myths and Legends Around the World *Please note that you are absolutely welcome to use other public domain sources. (In fact, bonus points for finding a new source, particularly if it contains cultures not yet represented on the list!)

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

We are filling the last of Collection 8 right now. (I need to edit the main post before this gets moved into Readers Wanted.)

I will be DPL, as well.

Here's one:

The Story of Panch Mar Khan by Alice Elizabeth Dracott (?? - 1939) (via findagrave.com)

Let me know if the quality is okay -- there's kind of an echo where I'm recording, which I tried to limit by lowering my voice and getting closer to microphone; also my voice is rougher than usual today and I'm not sure why! It's short enough to be easy to re-record if necessary and I'll be back at my home base tomorrow so I'll be happy to redo if you think it needs it.

Hello, folks! I am so sorry for being slow as molasses here lately. I got hit by a surprise announcement from our daughter of a short-order wedding, and then my second Covid shot kicked my butt. I had to get Real Life sorted and caught back up, and now I'm here to process your submissions.

Hi, Cathy! Welcome to Librivox! It's very nice to have you with us. I remember very well how confusing everything was when I first got here. It all sorts out, though, and things get much smoother for you!

When you upload a file to LV, you'll need to post the link of the upload which appears when the file is finished, and it will look like this:

https://mc@librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/mlaw009_birdofparadise_frary_ch_128kb.mp3

(What you've posted is just the name of the file, which doesn't actually give me the file, as I can't see the upload folder at all.) Never fear this time! Our wonderful MC was able to dig up the file that was yours, so I do have it now for the Magic Window.

**BUT - I can't formally assign your section for you until we've made you a Catalog Reader Page. I need to know what name you want us to use for that? (Some of us use our real names, others use their forum posting name, and others make up a different psuedonym.)

If you reply with what name you want used, I'll get your page made and finish assigning the section for your story. :)

Again, welcome to LibriVox!

Alessandro, this is a great contribution! Thank you for your reading. :)

Everything is good with your file's specs and volume.

The only edit I would recommend is in your outro: You sign it off as the end of Book 1, The Coming of the Tuatha de Danaan, but the reading doesn't include chapter 2 of Book 1, so the outro should say the end of Book 1, Chapter 1, The Fight with the Firbolgs.

If you enjoyed recording this story, feel free to submit subsequent chapters in the Myths and Legends Around the World project - each reader may have 2 sections in a given collection. (But there is zero obligation to do any more.) :)
