Short Science Fiction Collection 078 by Various ( - ).

Science fiction is a genre encompassing imaginative works that take place in this world or that of the author’s creation where anything is possible. The only rules are those set forth by the author. The speculative nature of the genre inspires thought and plants seeds that have led to advances in science. The genre can spark an interest in the sciences and is cited as the impetus for the career choice of many scientists. It is a playing field to explore social perspectives, predictions of the future, and engage in adventures unbound into the richness of the human mind. ( A. Gramour)
• This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/short-science-fiction-collection-078-by-various/
  • This collection is for science fiction stories of less than 70 minutes in duration that are in the Public Domain(with expired copyright, or published before 1925). Gutenberg plain text, us-ascii, uncompressed files of less than 78 KB or 10,000 story words can generally be read in less than 70 minutes.
Claiming stories is unnecessary (duplicates are held for future collections)

    Finding Texts:

Librivox threads on Science fiction in the public domain and the new arrivals in PG can be found here: List of Early Science Fiction and More Recent Sci Fi.
Project Gutenberg’s Science Fiction Bookshelf is a good starting point.
Project Gutenberg continues to add science fiction magazines such as The Galaxy and Astounding Stories. There you can view the fantastic covers and illustrations that accompany the stories.
The Science Fiction Short Stories Science Fiction Short Stories page shows stories that can be read in less than 60 minutes.

    File Requirements:
    • Recording must be a monaural MP3 file with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit rate of 128 Kbps.

    • File name must be formatted entirely in lower case letters and use under-bars to separate values as in:
ssf078_titleinoneword_authorlastname_readersinitials_128kb.mp3 (e.g. ssf078_nightfall_asimov_abc_128kb.mp3) Exclude definite articles like “The” from the file name.

Recordings require 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the file.
    Beginning Announcement:
“[story title] by [author]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name]".
Then repeat: "[Title], by [author]. Translated by [translator]."

    Ending Announcement:
"End of [title], by [author] Translated by [translator]."
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Recordings require 5 seconds of silence at the end of the file.

    Posting completed recordings:
    • Send your completed recording to us by using the LibriVox Uploader
    Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
  • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: alg1001
  • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
  • For help with posting completed recordings see the How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
• Always post a message to this forum thread after a successful upload. The message must contain:
o The story title
o The author’s name
o The URL displayed by the LibriVox Uploader after the file has successfully uploaded
o The URL for the online version of the text. So there can be a choice of file format to download, please use the Gutenberg main page for the source such as https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/29975
o The duration of the recording
• If this is your first submission to the Short Science Fiction Collections please provide:
o Your name/pseudonym as you wish it to appear in the LibriVox catalog
o Your personal website URL (optional)
Check this forum thread frequently for messages pertaining to your story!

**********************************************************************************
Looking for a short work to read, that has not already been recorded at Librivox?
**********************************************************************************

If you are making your first ever, librivox recording I STRONGLY suggest you complete the 1 minute test first. This will uncover technical issues you may have over looked, it is much more pleasant to work through them in a 1 minute recording.
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test

Here are some selections that you might enjoy. Feel free to record and submit one.

First Stage: Moon by Dick Hetschel
1000 words, ~ 5 minutes
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/58758

The Ethicators by Willard Marsh
1800 Words ~ 9 Minutes
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/59375

Half Around Pluto by Manly Wade Wellman
4200 words ~ 21 Minutes
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/60595

Farmer by Mack Reynolds
11,000 words ~ 60 minutes (this might need to be recorded in 2 parts to stay under the 70 Minute limit per track)
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/51799

You do not need to claim it, just record and submit it.

This post will be updated when a recording is submitted.

If two people record and submit the same story, one of the recordings will be in the next collection.

James.

Hi TN,
This story is already in this collection. I will move your story into the next collection 078.
Thanks!
-Amy
Thank you for your second contribution as well, TN

Much like the first, you have a technical issue that needs to be addressed.
Volume is low at 79.8 the target range is 86-92

And again there is some light background noise, that may be intensified as you increase the volume, you will probably want to apply at least one round of noise reduction before resubmitting. There were a couple of light bumps as well, not bad at this volume level, but you might want to listen through before resubmitting and see if there are noises you need to address.

James
Hello,

Here is a revised version of my recording. Please let me know if it is sufficient.

URL: https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/ssf077_nopetsallowed_cummings_tn_128kb.mp3
Duration: 8:29

Best regards,
TN
TN,

serveral technical issues, with no pets allowed
Bit rate is 186 kpps not 128kpps
It has variable bit rate, not a constant bit rate.
The volume is low at 82.1 it should be between 86 and 92
I did not listen to the recording, for other issues.

You should work through the one minute test to get your settings correct. You can learn about this in the opening post,

James,
I'll move the help links above the MW if you think it seems to be hard to notice in that location.
Thanks,

That is fine, Amy. I was looking in the same place you had it last time. For new users it doesn't matter as they will not have an existing expectation of location.

I tried submitting this on the other thread, but realized the site I pasted was wrong- this is where I got it from. The author himself has said this story was for the public domain.

No, this isn't what we do here. That would be like reading a story you wrote yourself. And again, your filename is capitalized.

There are different 'levels' of public domain. The link you provide shows "Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike (cc by-nc-sa)", that is not same as public domain. Copyright is a complex subject. Librivox only accepts works that are 'Public domain in the United States' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_in_the_United_States.

There is more detail about it https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Copyright_and_Public_Domain and here https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Why_Public_Domain_and_not_a_Creative_Commons_license%3F

Third times the charm. That's a lot of Marlon Brandos.
Thanks for your story, Anna. How would you like your name to appear in the catalog.

Thanks for your explanation, James.

Anna,

Your recording sounds good, good tempo, and voice changes, clear voice with no background noise. I assume you did some editing to get this quality, good job. If you can pull of this quality of recording in a single pass without editing FABULOUS!

You do have some technical issues that need to be corrected. I think all of these can be corrected without re-recording.

* Bit rate is 192 should be 128kbps
* Volume is low at 78.7 should be between 86-92
* Need 1 second of opening silence, you have less then half a second
* Ending silence should be about 5 seconds, you have almost 10 seconds.

There are links in the opening post for new person help. You might want to work through the 1 mintue test to learn about the technical issues.

Your submission post looks mostly good, you used all lower case, and have a good links to a PD work. :)

You do need to include the actual run time, of the recording; minutes and seconds. As this will change when your resubmit please included the run time when your resubmit.
