Thanks, Piotr! It's good to have these two related recordings in the same volume of the SNF. I'd like to have the two readings stay together in the cataloging process too, so that people can, or will, listen to both of them together. For lack of a better idea, I've titled your second recording, on John Huss, as "Hussites: John Huss, Bohemian Reformer and Martyr." That way, it will follow your first recording, which, at present, is simply titled "Hussites." If you have any thoughts on this scheme, or a better idea, please let me know. Thanks for these important historical readings for the SNF!

As you undoubtedly know, the recordings are cataloged in alphabetical order.

Hi David, Thank you for your second contribution to vol. 081! This is a most interesting July 4th oration given during the U.S. Civil War by J. Howard Pugh, who, in 1862 was a practicing medical doctor in New Jersey.

Pugh's description of the state of the Union at the beginning of his speech sounded, to me, so "contemporary" that I was taken aback.

"Not all these anniversaries have been, or will be days of jubilee... you remember to-day one year ago, when the American Congress met in a beleaguered city, within the sound of rebel cannon, with rebel ensigns flaunting almost in the face of the Capitol, met in solemn and determined counsel to devise ways and means to save the nation from destruction at the hands of its own misguided children. And then, to-day; what shall I say of to-day? To-day, when sorrow sits brooding in a million homes, when the shadow of civil war still rests like a pall upon the nation, when in the beautiful Virginia that Washington loved, his children are grappling in the struggle of death." J. Howard Pugh

As I read the rest of his speech, I was struck by what did and did not motivate Pugh's patriotism. To Pugh, the survival of the Union was all important; the abolition of slavery was not:

“What are we fighting for?” What we are not fighting for is apparent enough. We are not fighting for the abolition of slavery... Not but that the latter has important bearings on the war, both in the relation of cause and cure, but the great issue before us is not one of the good or ill of four millions of blacks, but of thirty millions of whites." J. Howard Pugh

I suppose my take-a-way from Pugh's speech has to be, simply, that turbulent times are difficult times, and there are no easy answers.

Sue, I had the same reaction as you, how contemporary in so many places. Also a good reminder that, even for Lincoln, the beginning and early years of the Civil War were about saving the Union, not freeing the slaves. But then, they moved on; room for two major results of the War. If the South had won, the Union would have been destroyed and the slaves would not have been freed.


Craig, I didn't know Hume was a librarian either. Long ago and far away I was once a reference librarian at UCLA; I always have a soft spot in my heart for librarians -- and books, of course !!

Wow, talk about a cinematic race to the finish! It's wonderful to have so many great recordings, so many new people contributing to the SNF, and so many old-timer LibriVoxers still behind their microphones!

Let's give a cheer to Craig (Soupy) for the fantastic clip at which he has been proof listening all your recordings! And let's give him the time he needs to listen to all the recordings that have come in in the past few days.

Craig, our Dedicated Proof listener (DPL); Jo (knotyouraveragejo), our MetaCoordinator (MC), and myself, your Book Coordinator (BC), all have work ahead of us before Jo can catalog. Among other things, I will need a few days to put together an introduction to vol. 081. I counsel patience!

Once the dust has settled from this volcanic eruption of recordings submitted in the last day or two, I'll be posting vol. 082! So, save up your recordings, and watch for the next volume of the SNF to appear in the Readers Wanted: Short Works (Poetry and Prose) thread.
