Out of the Closet: A Collection of Early LGBTQ+ Fiction by Various ( - ).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/out-of-the-closet-a-collection-of-early-lgbtq-fiction-by-various/

This is a collection of 25 LGBTQ+ stories published between 1841-1923, covering a wide span of authors, genres, and literary traditions. Some stories are coded and euphemistic, operating on the level of subtext and often framing their central relationships as friendships or familial bonds. Others are surprisingly brazen and bold for their time, courting controversy for their refusal to obscure the sexuality of their chararcters. Some tales come from canonical, widely known authors (Whitman, Chopin, Wilde, Cather), while others emerge from obscurer and less recognized writers (Thanet, Cooke, Bunner). Some are tragic and self-critical, clearly the byproducts of when they were written. Others are lightly comedic or triumphant, bucking the conventions of the time. Throughout each story, however, persists a desire to represent the seemingly unrepresentable, finding expression for the "love that dare not speak its name."

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): linked below
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Some quick notes--

1) I've had two big, ambitious projects in the hopper for a couple of years now: this and George Bernard Shaw's Back to Methuselah. And since this was (by far!) the less exhausting and time-intensive of the two, we're starting with this one. I've had the selections picked out for a while now, but managed to stumble upon a couple of new stories that would make great inclusions.

2) With that said, this is still wildly incomplete. In particular, I wanted to add at least one Edward Prime-Stevenson story, but his short fiction is almost impossible to come by. If anyone can find any of his stories (in PD publications -- not the reprints), please let me know. I would definitely amend this listing and add it to the collection, if that happened.

Do we accept the Australian Gutenberg? I think that story is available elsewhere, if that's the case. It has been recorded for LibriVox but I don't know if that's an issue for you. There are other stories, though, from this author.

Hi Chuck - I'm happy to set this up for you but we will need to check the links and I will not be able to do thatfor about 8 hours - PG Australia uses Australian copyright - author death not publication and there are a few others I'll need to check too
But I'll get you a window - just no claims till I have checked .

Thanks annise! I'll set everything up in a bit. :-)

re: the Australian Gutenberg link. I used this particular link because it was the one used for the other preexisting recording of this story for Librivox. There's a direct scan of the original book from this story came from on Archive.org, but the quality is a little eye-straining. I figured this version would be easier on our volunteers (especially since it seemed fine in the past).

And the only link I plan on replacing is for "Paul's Case," which was intended as temporary. However, there's no shortage of PD sources for that story, so I'm not worried. The rest are either from Project Gutenberg or provide direct scans of the original publications.

Hi Chuck! What a wonderful compilation of works this is, and I'd love to read for a few. Provided their respective sources are deemed OK, may I have 16 and 23 to start?

Thank you! You have no idea how much work into the creation of this compilation.

And thanks. I'll add you to the MW right now.

I'm happy with the links - they seem all to be backed up by dated sources, If this is your first collection do you know about adding metadata ?

Thanks Anne! Glad my ability to plunge into old, musty periodicals hasn’t waned with time.

And I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean by the metadata. 😬 Do you have a resource you could direct me to?

I'd like to do "Two Friends" by Mary Wilkins Freeman

Thanks for putting this collection together, looks like it was a ton of work!

Thank you so much!

It was a lot of work, but also pretty fun. I had to comb through a lot of anthologies and critical studies, and then plow through HathiTrust and Project Gutenberg to see what was available. I'm still sad that I wasn't able to find the really obscure, privately printed stuff, but no collection is ever complete.

Two additional updates--

In putting this together, I also discovered a new story that I'd like to add to the collection. The story was published in 1922, so it shouldn't be a problem.

"A Boy's Discovery" (Robert McAlmon)
https://archive.org/details/hastybunch00mcalrich/page/n65/mode/2up

I also forgot to add the author death dates to the MW. Give me one moment and I'll fix that.

re metadata
In a collection, the catalogue page shows the source the title and the author for each section - the titles are automatically added but the author and the source have to be entered before cataloguing and I think it's easier to start early and do a few then come back than to do them at the end :D

If you go to the page where you enter the title and the claims etc, the column next to the number has a magnifying glass, click on it and a few lines open at the top of the table - enter the author and the link and language and then click on add and it is done
Any questions ask :D
Anne

(if there are new authors not in the dropdown let me know with any info and they will be added to the author database)

Gotcha. I'll start working on that tomorrow evening. As for new authors to the catalogue, I think we're only adding the following:

Arnold Lunn (1888-1974)
