The Rover, Vol. 01 No. 01 by Seba Smith (1792 - 1868) and Lawrence Labree (editors).
"The Rover: A weekly magazine of tales, poetry and engravings, original and selected" was a magazine started in 1843 by Seba Smith and Lawrence Labree. The editors aimed at a high quality standard in their selection of short stories and poetry. Every half-year, the 26 weekly issues were also published under a bound compilation. This is the very first issue, containing 7 short stories. ( Sonia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/rover02labrgoog/page/n13/mode/2up
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

By chance, I found this weekly magazine with interesting short stories and poetry, so I decided to launch it 8-) Please note that half a year's issues were bound together into one big compilation, but this would be too big for one project, so we'll have each weekly issue in a separate project.

The page references in the MW should help find the stories quite easily.

Looking forward to hearing them all !

so as promised, I listened to the story and it was a very adventurous one, although the ending was quite predictable.

Beautiful narration, I enjoyed the reading very much. :9:

I found a few small errors in the text, which you could correct though. Please understand that you don't have to re-record the entire story again (I mention this as you are quite new still). It's encouraged that you rather only spot correct the parts that I will mention in my PL notes, as it's less work for the reader and also the PLer later on.

The easiest way to edit and correct is to re-record the wrong part of the sentence in a new Audacity window (do you use Audacity ?), then amplify and noise-clean to make it sound similar in volume to the rest of the original recording. Then highlight and copy, and paste it into the slot where the wrong sentence was.

So here are the spots that need correcting:

> at 0:25: for the title, please also include the name of the author if it was mentioned in the magazine. I always write the full title in the Magic Window, so you can see what you have to read for each section. In this case, please add: "by Washington Irving"

> at 0:55: (p. 4) "this very witty and exceedingly wise potentate" – you say "potential", which is a change in meaning

> at 16:07: (p. 6) "missives were sent" – I think I hear "mischiefs", but maybe I'm mistaken, could you maybe check it out and correct if wrong ?

> at 22:31: (p. 7) "for their union was blessed with a numerous progeny – I think you said "progency" :hmm:

Thank you, Dessa, a great start in this collection :) If all the stories are as interesting then I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest.
