Ha! The topic sounds perfect!

Regarding excerpts: we don't allow the same recording to be used in more than one project. So if you were to record part of this work for this collection, you'd need to record it again for your solo. It sounds like jumping through hoops, and in a way it is. We don't want the same recording in more than one project, so having someone do a fresh recording of it is kinda getting by on a technicality - following the letter of the law rather than the spirit.

I'd counsel that if you are thinking of recording it as a solo, don't bother with this collection for now. You could start recording it now with the intention of soloing it (you don't have to set it up as a solo in the forum right away; you could record first). If you decide NOT to finish it as a solo, then submit the excerpt audio here. But I don't think I'd record part of it and submit it here, then turn around and do the whole thing as a solo.

Does this make sense?

And yes - 30 minutes at a minimum. Preferably longer.

I found this hilarious thread last night, and was laughing so much that I couldn’t fall asleep. Oh, the irony!

I think I found something suitable for reading. It’s from the Library of Congress.
I just wanted to confirm with you that it’s permissible to read from their archives.
It may also be a bit shy of 30 minutes, if that’s okay.

Good news and bad news:

The source text is OK, but I really need recordings to be at least 30 minutes.

You could record it, and if it's less than 30 minutes, you could submit it to the Short Nonfiction Collection. Granted, it might be a bit boring for there.

From too short to too long!
Many of the texts I'm finding now are quite lengthy.
Is it permissible to read excerpts?
And, if so, how to select them?
I am thinking in particular of The Candy Maker's Guide by Fletcher Manufacturing Company at Project Gutenberg, but the options are many!

Yes, excerpts are fine. And it's your choice as to how you want to choose them.

An hour's recording is about 10,000 words or so, depending on your reading speed.

What you could do is just start reading, then when you know you're going to be way over 30 minutes after editing and you're sick and tired of it, you can stop.

To be safe, you could do about 60 minutes of raw recording.

Hello!

I am just about finished with my reading.
A question:
You ask at the beginning of the recording to say [Chapter/Section/Part] of [Book title].
The book I'm reading from isn't divided into chapters or sections, and doesn't have a table of contents.
I haven't read the complete book, but stopped at about an hour into the text.
How would you like me to handle that?

In the end, I didn't' find the material boring at all, and was very touched by the respect with which the writers treated their craft.
But hoping for a calming effect, nonetheless.
