G.K. Chesterton's Newspaper Columns: The New Witness - 1921 by G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/chestertons-new-witness-1921-by-g-k-chesterton/
A collection of the newspaper columns/essays written by G.K. Chesterton for "The New Witness", under the heading "At the Sign of the World's End". This project compiles the articles from 1921. (Summary by Maria Therese)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=iau.31858045073164&view=1up&seq=7 The exact text link for each section is linked in the MW!
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
      • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

      Any questions?
      Please post below

Oh, no, more dear Chesterton! What does he dip his pen in?

Well, I'll have to take something. I've perused 41-45 and they will be an interesting read, so if you'd like to go ahead and put me in for them, I'd be glad to do them.

Oh, it's so hard to pass up Chesterton! But I have a bit much on the roster right now to take any. I'll just lurk for now and pick up a few later on, after I've checked off a few of my current commitments.

Hi,

Welcome to LibriVox! Section 14 is all yours! Please read the first post of this thread carefully.

Please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Also, since this is your first recording, we ask that you send in a 1-minute test recording. This is not an audition, it's just to make sure the sound quality and the recording settings are all right - often things can be improved at the outset that are difficult to fix later. Please go to https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test to find out what to record for your 1-minute test, and how to upload the recording. In the LibriVox Uploader, please select 'tests - tests' from the MC drop-down, and then post your test recording in the Listeners Wanted forum, rather than in this thread - you'll get feedback more quickly there.

Hi Maria

The text links in the first post and MW give me a message from Hathi Trust saying "this item is not available on line". Is this because I am not in the USA? Chesterton died in 1936 so there should not be a copyright issue in England.

Hi Alan,

Yes, unfortunately it appears that Hathi won't let periodicals be shown outside the US, and I can't find these anywhere else. I think they do that because of multiple authors in each issue, and it would be too much work to verify the PD'ness of each outside the US.

The Chesterton articles definitely should be PD for you. If you are interested, I can screen shot anything you are interested in and get it to you that way. They are generally a little over a page long, so it shouldn't be a bit deal. Let me know.

Hi Maria
Thanks for the clarification. If it is not too much trouble perhaps you could send me the text of section 20 (the religion of George Bernard Shaw). Then I could have a look and decide if I would like to read it.
Do you need an email address?
Cheers
