Chad -

Recordings for this collection need to be at least 30 minutes long. Would you rather add about 20 more minutes of text to it, or submit it to the Short Nonfiction collection at the length it now is?

Sorry, Tricia, I have to bug you with yet another Q about A Catechism of Familiar Things:
Since I am doing "selections from," can I skip parts here and there?
The reason I ask is that of the chapters I plan to read -- which now are (most likely) chapters I, II, and XVIII -- there are some sections that I just can't seem to get through without stumbling repeatedly and generally getting very frustrated.
WDYT?
Thank you...LJB

I think it would be better to keep the text intact as much as possible. We're already chopping it up by only doing certain chapters.

Are you not used to editing stumbles and repeats? I sometimes can't get out a phrase and have to try it half a dozen times, missing one word and then another, none of the tries being perfect. Then I piece together the best parts of all those tries. It comes out almost seamless and as if I had no problems with it, if it's edited correctly. The key is to do each repeat in a similar intonation and volume, not letting your pent-up frustration show in your voice. ;)

Here is a contribution based on one of the provided suggestions.

Excerpt from Chapter 4: Names and Sentences of the "First Fleeters" from "Convict life in New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land"

Hello,
I will record the chapter 2 and maybe 3 from A CATECHISM OF FAMILIAR THINGS; THEIR HISTORY, AND THE EVENTS WHICH LED TO THEIR DISCOVERY.
I nearly fell asleep reading it myself. lol

Another reader has indicated interest in that work:

Just FYI for now:
I am planning to do "Selections From" the Catechism of Familiar Things, specifically:
(depending on how long it takes)
: Chapter 1 -- Dew, Water, Rain, etc.
: Chapter 2 -- Corn, Barley, Pearl Barley, etc.
: Chapter 4 -- Cocoa, Toddy, Cherries, etc.
: Chapter 5 -- Bombazine, Crape, Camlet, etc.
...LJB
Could you do other chapters from it?

In the meantime, please wait for feedback on your weekly poetry submission. I listened to it quickly, and I noticed there's a lot of electrical/background noise. Best to get that ironed out before investing a ton of time on a really long reading like for this project!

Hello Tricia & Lola,
Sorry to delay this thing...
I have to bow out of this project.
Too many things are happening on the home front.
So if Lola or anyone else wants any other part of the Catechism, it's all yours.

Catechism of Familiar Things:

This is a somewhat long list, but most of the items are just zooming in a bit and cutting out the mistake. I suggest working from the back forward; this way the time stamps won't change on the remaining edits as you cut out stuff.

3.5 seconds of silence at the beginning; please cut this down to about 0.5 second.

1:54 - stumble: "The Ath- The Athenians pretend"

2:13-2:17 - long pause. Please cut down to maybe 1.5 to 2 seconds.

3:43 - slight stumble: "for which reason its consumption is very considerable"

3:51 - remove loud click

8:00-8:15 - this portion is repeated at 8:15. Please delete 8:00-8:15

9:06 - stumble: "grows in a tempr- temperate climate"

11:35-11:39 - long pause with a lip smack in the middle. :) Please cut down to about a second.

12:25, 12:28, 12:38 - three uses of Cacao-nut. The way you say it sounds like coconut. :) It's more like cuh-COW nut.

13:19 - lip smack

22:01 - stumble: "manufacture, inven- invited over the Flemings"

22:30 - right after "to forbid it." sounds like a microphone bump to be deleted out.

24:34 - stumble: "The sheef-- the chief distinction"

24:52-24:56 - long pause to be cut down

24:56 - right before "Where were carpets..." a mic bump to delete out

25:44 - lip smack

26:20 - throat clearing, followed by mic bump

30:31 - stumble: "used for warming-- warm clothing"

30:41 - a couple mouse clicks to cut out

31:04 - loud noise right after your name

About 10 seconds of silence at the end; please cut this down to 5 seconds.

Needs Noise Reduction. Try 18 dB reduction. Here are instructions for noise reduction: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noisecleaning_With_Pics

Amplify by 13 dB. You may need to zoom in and lower some spikes in the recording to accomplish this (such as the very first syllable in the intro, "CHAP-ter two"). I suggest amplifying as much as it will let you (something like 5 dB), then going in and lowering any spikes that look like they'll prevent further amplification. Then amplify again, to a total of 13 dB.

(FYI: &c. is "et cetera" - we normally see it today as "etc." You did say it correctly once but appear to have left it out the other times. I won't have you go back and add it, but be sure to read it in future recordings.)

Please make the edits, and upload using the same file name. It's not 100% correct, but I'll fix it at cataloging time. :)
