I am planning to do "Selections From" the Catechism of Familiar Things, specifically:
(depending on how long it takes)
: Chapter 1 -- Dew, Water, Rain, etc.
: Chapter 2 -- Corn, Barley, Pearl Barley, etc.
: Chapter 4 -- Cocoa, Toddy, Cherries, etc.
: Chapter 5 -- Bombazine, Crape, Camlet, etc.

Hello,

I just want to pass it by you and make sure that it is okay to read two chapters from a book titled Art by Auguste Rodin (Chapters 8 & 9). I have a question: How will I record between the transition from chapter 8 to chapter 9? I'm a bit uncertain about this.

In the intro, you'd say "Chapters 8 and 9 of..." Then after the disclaimer, at the start of the text, you'd say, "Chapter 8. Thought in Art."

Then at the end of chapter 8: "He is, as Dante said of Virgil, 'their guide, their master, and their friend.'"

Pause maybe 2 seconds, then "Chapter 9. Mystery in Art."

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Hi there. I was checking out this thread and saw that Spalding's Base Ball Guide of 1889 was listed as a suggestion. I would love to read a portion of it, but I have no idea how to approach some of the statistical tables, mostly because they seem to be formatted horribly no matter which version I try to read on gutenberg.

Can someone who's read a similar work help me maybe pick out a section? Thanks!

Did you try the plain text version? They seem to be lined up nicely there. There are also other yearly editions on Archive which are scans of the originals: https://archive.org/search.php?query=Spalding%27s+Baseball+Guide+and+Official+League+Book

So, one other question still remains - how would you read a table? For example, in the following:

If I were to start with the won-lost record table, would it be "Brooklyn, won 86, lost 43, played 129, drawn 0, batting average .267, fielding average .921"
Or should I do each column - "Games won, Brooklyn, 86, Chicago, 83, Philadelphia, 78"

Or am I overthinking it?

Either way.

I think it would take more time to read them across, because I'd think that saying those headings each time would go slower. But that's probably not an important factor, and it might not make that much difference anyway.

I am getting the Catechism ready, and have a quick Q for you (in the "better safe than sorry" vein):

There is no author indicated; after the title (and explanation thereof), it just says --

New York, Cincinnati, and St. Louis:
BENZIGER BROTHERS
PRINTERS TO THE HOLY APOSTOLIC SEE.
Copyright, 1881, by BENZIGER BROTHERS.

So my Q is:
Can I say, "Selections from A Catechism of Familiar Things, published by Benziger Brothers"?

I like it! It sounds better than "Selections from A Catechism of Familiar Things, by unknown."

Or you could do "by anonymous" - either the publisher or anon. works for me.

I might even say the entire title & explanation ("their history...schools and families...enlarged and revised edition").
And even even even, the scintillating Preface as well as a few chapters.

Publication date 1929 in German; the English would be later, so it's not PD.
